Chapter Seven: Mixed Emotions

I could hear him marching up the stairs, each of his ferocious steps making the house ratte.

He swung the door open.

"Cassidy! I know you heard me. Fix some lunch and finish your chores."

"Yes, sir. What would you like?" I pleaded internally that he would say what he wants and leave, so Emily can work her way out.

He squinted his eyes at me suspiciously. Then he walked over to my closet and peered in.

"What are you hiding? More like, who are you hiding?"

"I'm not-"

"Don't lie to me, girl. How many times have I told you I can see right through you. I can tell when you're disobeying me. And you know no one is allowed here."

I stared at him.

"If I find something out of place or someone actually hid-"

A noise.

From under the bed. He scowled and dropped to one knee to look underneath it.

"No! Please. We were only talking. That's all Emily came over for." I begged him.

Instead of the yalling and torrential downpoar of cussing, his voice was steady. "Emily, dear, please forgive my rough intrusion. I apologize, but I must ask you to leave. At once. My daughter here has many, many things she must do for my wife and me. While I know she would much rather spend this delightful day with you, she must finish her chores." Emily scrambled out from under the bed. "Thank you, Miss Emily."

This is what scared me the most. His calm demeanor was so rare, and he reserved it only for when he was so mad he could barely control himself.

Emily glanced at me. The look in her eyes told me everything she wanted to say, but couldn't. 'I'm sorry. I love you. I miss you. I wish everything was different.'

With that, she ran out. I could hear her sniffling as she left and her small footsteps fading away until she made it out the front door. It slammed closed behind her.

I didn't dare look at Keith. I averted my eyes to the floor, praying he wouldn't do anything too damaging.

"What am I going to do with you? One day, you're out gallivanting with boys, and the next you blatantly disobey my rules and let someone in the house. How should your rebellious behavior be punished? I think I have a pretty good idea."

He approached me, and I sunk to the floor in fear this time, my small frame curling into a ball. Ash was wrong. I'm not strong. I can't take any more. I covered my face with my hands.

"Please. I never meant anything by it. I only wanted to talk with her. Plea-"

I never got the chance to finish.

Ash's POV

Something was wrong.

I could feel it. Plus, it was 2:45, an hour after we were supposed to meet. Part of me felt like she was just late, but Cassidy didn't seem like that type of person. I think I already knew what happend... but I didn't want to believe it.

I darted out of Stromboli House. I signaled for a cab and told him the directions.

Hold on Cassidy.

I'm coming.

*30 minutes later*

The cab drove up to the gate, and I paid him.
