And here I am, being semi-productive and posting oneshots when I should be working on my fanfictions. Anyway, I've been channeling Hiccup's inner douchbag for HTTYA and a friend suggested I do something like this. I give you, moody and jerky Hiccup! Takes place a few months before RTTE. Hiccstrid is about 18 or 19.
Astrid was getting real fed-up with Hiccup's attitude lately.
Granted, he wasn't exactly trying to act like a complete asshole, but sometimes that's how he came across. Snotlout, Fishlegs and the twins had all moved on from the Academy, having come to the conclusion that the dragon hunting was over, and there was nothing more to find. Hiccup, stubborn as he was, refused to give up the search, insisting there was more out there. Astrid admired his determination...juuust not his attitude.
Over the past year, since everyone but Astrid had left the Academy, Hiccup had grown more and more like the spoiled heir he should have been. Of course, it made sense, considering the changes that had happened in his life in the course of just a few years. He was finally being treated right after 15 years of ostracism, he was the Hero of Berk, he owned the only Night Fury ever seen by Berkian eyes, and he was the chief's son. Of course that would go to anyone's head.
Astrid tried to ignore Hiccup's stubborn rambling about visiting Eel Island for the third time that week, insisting he saw something last time and wanted to check it out. It had crossed her mind at one point that he was just desperate, that he was trying to keep his place in the world of dragons and avoid entering a world he didn't want to be in, a world of chiefing and village responsibilities and little time to himself. She understood he was confused, but it still didn't excuse his prissy attitude.
"It's gotta be around here somewhere." Hiccup pointed to the southeast part of Eel Island on his map. "That's about where we were when I saw it."
"You mean when you thought you saw it," Astrid said from his side, idly plucking at the grass in front of her. The two of them sat on the cliff at the edge of the village, the map spread out between them, their dragons playing in the water 50 feet below.
"I know I saw something," Hiccup said. "It was no Typhoomerang, that was for sure, and there are no other known dragon species that live on Eel Island."
"Hiccup, maybe we should take a break from all this for a minute," Astrid offered, inching closer to Hiccup's side. "I wanted to talk to you about--"
"Maybe it could be something obscure from the Book of Dragons," Hiccup interjected, completely ignoring her. He pulled the book closer to him, as he brought it practically everywhere now. He opened it up and started flipping through the pages.
Astrid just shrugged it off and kept talking. "You know, Stoick's started up this program called the Berk Guard, and--"
Hiccup cut her off again. "It's got to be Stoker Class. Typhoomerangs are Stoker, and they don't get along with the other classes very well."
"Hiccup--"
"They would have gotten rid of it, chasing it off or something."
"Hiccup, I'm trying to--"
"Unless it just recently got there, then they wouldn't have--"
"Okay that's it!" Astrid shot to her feet and whistled for Stormfly.
"Astrid?" Hiccup looked up at her. "What's wrong?"
"You!" she shot back, causing Hiccup to recoil with a slight fear in his eyes. He'd always been scared of Astrid, especially when she got that look in her eye like she wanted to have you for breakfast. Now was one of those scary times. "You've become a complete asshole! I'm trying to talk to you about something and you're not even listening! You never listen anymore! All you care about is finding more stupid dragons! Stormfly!"
"Astrid...what are you doing?" Hiccup stood up, looking nervous, as Stormfly landed beside her mistress.
"Stormfly," Astrid glared at Hiccup and pointed at him. "Nest."
"Oh shit!" Hiccup took off running, chased by an overzealous Stormfly. He didn't get very far before Stormfly tackled him to the ground, sitting on his back as if she was a chicken sitting on her egg. "Oh come on!"
Astrid walked over to him, looking down at him with her arms crossed. "Now you stay there until I say you can get up."
With that, she walked away, leaving poor Hiccup at Stormfly's mercy.
It was nearly sunset when Astrid returned for Hiccup. She'd left him on the cliff for six hours, as a nest for her dragon. Toothless had, of course, stayed by Hiccup's side the entire time, making sure Stormfly didn't hurt him. When Astrid reached the cliff, Hiccup had his arms crossed under his chin, looking quite bored with the situation. He looked up as she came up to him. "Can I please get up now?"
"Only if you've learned your lesson." Astrid crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow slightly.
Hiccup sighed, turning his head to the side so he could nod. "Yes. I'm sorry I've been acting like such a jerk. I've been too focused on the searching and the dragons...I'm sorry. I'm just..."
Astrid motioned for Stormfly to move, and the Nadder leapt off of Hiccup. Astrid knelt down and helped him to his feet. "I know. It's a lot, what with your dad breathing down your neck and the guys all leaving the Academy...it's hard. But you don't need to be an asshole about it."
"I don't try to," Hiccup said defensively.
"I know." Astrid smirked and lightly punched his arm. "Just don't do it again."
Hiccup rubbed the spot she punched, flashing his dorky smirk. "As milady commands."
