Smoke | Eighteen
This chapter may have you in your feelings, may.Christopher Brown.
"You did what!"
Could this lady hear. I just explained to her descriptively what I did to Levi the other day.
"It was a threat. We're fine-""You threatened the mother of your children with a pocket knife! My God!" She says hysterically.
"I know... that's why I scheduled this therapy session."
"And we'll be doubling the sessions. Twice a week I need to see you."She says next and I automatically roll my eyes to the back of my head. It was bad enough I saw her once a week. Skipping the previous weeks for awhile just because I didn't feel like coming.
"Well what exercise are we doing today, cause I have to pick up my sons from school." I mention slipping back into the chair further. Giving myself a few days off from work, it was okay because my boys know how to run a shop without me there.
She toys around with her laptop and squints reading over something. "Today is strategies to not get yourself overwhelmed, worked up and upset. You easily get upset right? And engage in petty arguments?"
"I do, often.
"Okay, well tell me your last recent argument. Remember every detail counts," She says waiting for me to speak. So which argument did I want to use? Levi using the last of the ketchup knowing I wanted some, Levi stepping on my shoes, Levi leaving toothpaste hanging off of the tube, or Levi taking my house keys instead of her house keys?
Tough decision, all were petty but. Let me just pick one, the quicker we do this shit the quicker I can get out of here.
"Well, my significant other and I share the same toothpaste. She thought it was a nice idea to leave the excess amount along the side of the cap and not wipe it off. That shit is annoying, so we went at it for like twenty minutes."
"About the toothpaste?" An eyebrow is now raised and she's probably in shock.
"Yes. That shit is annoying."
"Okay, and what was the resolution to this toothpaste problem?"
"Well, we haven't really resolved it..." I reply honestly. If Levi wasn't going to buy a new tube of toothpaste, why should I?
"Get your own. Sorry to say, it's just easier. And how upset did you get on a level from one to ten?"
"Ten, that shit annoys me I just fucking told you that lady." I whine, looking at her name tag is said Karen.
"You are a grown man, please be respectful for God sakes I'm trying to help you. Now let's move on."
Damn this lady. "Yeah sorry."
"Okay instead of arguing. You can count backwards then forward. I'll explain. It may be hard to grasp but it will take your mind off of the negativity and hopefully clear it. Counting like 10, 11, 9, 12, 8, 13, 7, 14 and so on. It can be internally or verbal. And believe it or not, your mind strays away and concentrates on the counting."
She crazy.
"I like that idea." I lie. Was she just pumping up my head with bullshit? Or should I just really try it?
Before she can continue, my phone begins ringing in my back pocket. "Excuse me." I say leaving the office and taking the call. It was my mom's number.
