Even being blind doesn't save you from the harsh light of the sun in the mornings. A soft groan escaped my mouth, sounding hoarse, as sunlight filtered through the blinds and filmy curtains of the canopy bed to assault my poor eyes.
Throwing an arm across my face, I did my best to block out the nuisance that the light was quickly becoming. The tips of my fingers brushed across something softer than bedsheets and a smile grew on my face despite being groggy and slightly pestered.
"Mornin'," I mumbled thickly, the sleep sticking to my voice like glue, promising not to leave me until I had some coffee in my system.
A tired, soft giggle greeted me and my arm was shoved off my face, causing another groan to be ripped from my throat. Snuggling closer, Lacey replied in a much nicer voice than mine, though still just as hoarse and used, "Morning, Mr. Groans-a-lot."
Chuckling huskily, I wrapped my arms around her petite frame and held her closer to my side, "Hey, it isn't my fault that the sun is an enigma and decided it couldn't sleep in just a little bit longer."
"I can fix that for you. If you'd like, that is," She suggested, the smile could be heard in her voice, but I could also feel it against my bare chest.
I imagined her hearing the rumble of my words as I spoke, nose buried in her hair, "Certainly wouldn't mind that. You're very good at fixing things."
This time she laughed and skillfully slipped from my arms. Though, I knew she would be back in a moment, I whined out, "Come onnn. Don't take my space heater awayyyyyy! She smelled really good, too!"
Lacey let out a bark of a laugh as her feet pitter-pattered across the wood flooring like rain, "I'll be back. I'm making the sun go away," She explained as if I didn't already know that.
Listening, I could hear her cinch the blinds shut and then drop the cord, the plastic piece bouncing against the wooden window pane. Then, the sound of her pulling her canopy curtains shut around the bed. Sliding her way back into my arms, she snuggled into my chest again.
Keeping her close to me, one hand resting between her shoulder blades and the other resting lightly against her hip, I smiled into her hair.
"Sleep well?" She mumbled against the hollow of my throat, her lips warm and still subtly swollen against the base of it.
Nodding a little, I began to stroke my thumb across the skin of her hip absentmindedly, "Slept like a rock. It was amazing. How about you, love?"
Minutely, she nodded in agreement, "I slept pretty well. You're not quite as soft as a pillow, but you come with a great lullaby."
She giggled as I laughed, "Hmm. Is that so? Would you mind telling me what this so called lullaby is? I wouldn't mind knowing how to recreate it if need be. You know, just for future reference."
"Your heartbeat, silly. Steady and calm.. Really nice to fall asleep to..." She confessed, sounding shy and sheepish, as if she was ashamed to be admitting something so sweet and sentimental so early in the morning.
"Well, thank you. I'll do my best to keep it that way. Though, with you around, I can't promise it'll always be so steady and calm."
Lacey laughed again, "That's okay. As long as it's still there. Sounds pretty good to me."
We lapsed into a content silence for another few minutes before Lacey wormed her way out of my arms again, shifting enough so she could sit up. Following suit, I sat up as well, "Are we going somewhere?"
I could feel her stretching, my right arm still wrapped around her waist, so I could feel her muscles contract and flex as she did. "Yep. I'm going to go make us some breakfast."
