Army Of Souls

„Oh, baby. You‘ll figure that all out on your own. You have lots of time now.“ he laughed on his own joke. „You are her.“

„I don‘t want to be.“ I told him with complete honesty. „I want to be me. Just me.“

„That‘s just part of you. Maybe you change it.“ he said gently.

„No.“

„But you can‘t change the past.“

I wasn't listening to him, the darkness with the shadows scared me. I walked into the forest, the light was fading, creating new shadows and dark patches around me. And then I saw it, pair of eyes.

„Hey! I know you are out there!“

I wanted to go there and check it but Nybbas grabbed my hand and forced me to looked from the shadows to him.

„I don‘t think it‘s a good idea for you to walk around here, without me.“

„Without you?“

„I suppose to protect you!“

„Protect me? So now you are my guardian angel?“ I walked away from him, shaking my head, making my hair fly around.

He didn't answer and another shadow caught my eyes from dark place, the shadow took a more human form. „Who is it?“ I whispered, staring at this one place without blinking.

„Run! RUN!“ Nybbas yelled at me but I couldn't stop looking. Something inside me compelled me. I wanted to go there. 

„RUN!“ I slowly looked at him, but he wasn't looking at me anymore.

He was staring over his shoulder, his eyes were big and full of fear. I turned around. The figure looked bizarre version of young woman, flash of light turned her hands into a huge set of dangerous horns. Every piece of me begin to scream.

„What‘s happening?“ I asked Nybbas, trying to hide the terror from my voice.

„I‘ll tell you later but right now don‘t look back and just come with me.“ he whispered. „Actually, RUN!“

I didn't argue with him. I didn't question him, I did exactly what he said, I moved faster. We ran away, as fast as we could. I tried to be quiet.

I had no clue what that thing had been. I only had a sense of darkness. We hadn't waited to see any more. We had both been breathless with fear and we had run and run and run...

My stomach felt sick.„Can we... can we stop? Please?“ I couldn't even catch my breath.

He looked at me worriedly. „Ok. Just stay here with me. Don't go anywhere.“

„Dont worry.“ I shook my head. „So... do you really think we‘re safe here?“

„Oow, so now I am good enough for you? Because I saved your ass?“ He smiled at me.

I rolled my eyes. „What was that?“

„I am not sure if I can tell you.“

„Are you serious?!“ I almost yelled at him. „I almost died there! I have a right to know!“ But he didn't answered.

„It has happened because of me?“

„What? No! It‘s not because of you. All of this happened because of a series of choices made by a number of people. This has nothing to do with you.“

My legs gave out and I sat down.

„Come on, we need to go.“ he looked down and me.

„I am too tired to be strong right now. How about you tell me about everything after I take a nap?“

„You don't get it, do you?“ He shook his head. „You can‘t take a nap, you can‘t get better, you can‘t rest. This is not heaven with rainbow and unicorns! This is Purgatory! We need to go! Stand up.“ he grabbed me under my elbow, lifted me to my feet.

I let him move me. Maybe he is right, it felt better to move.

„Can you please tell me what's going on here?“

„It's complicated. But OK, I tell what I know. We are not here alone, there are thousands of souls, werewolf, vampires, mythological creatures that you can‘t even imagine.“

„And witches.“ I interrupted him.

„You are a witch?“ he looked at me in surprise.

„Well... kind of.“ I hesitated, I wasn't sure if I can trust him.

„What do you mean?“

I sighed. „My mom was a witch, my father was hybrid - half vampire, half werewolf.“

„You‘re joking, right?“

„No, why should I?“

He stepped closed to me. „He wants you.“ His eyes were big and lost. „Come. We have to go, I can explain you later.“

„What? No. No! What are you doing?! I am not going anywehere until you tell what the hell is going on!“

He sighed. „Like I said before, there are thousands of souls, they are lost, lonely, desperate. This is the place where soul can come after death. No pure soul, here are only those who deserve it, those who did something really wrong during their lives and now they have to pay for it.

Soul can die, broke into pieces and you would never be able to put them together. You may be surprised but some souls don't want to leave from here.“

„They want to stay here?“

„If you want to get out of here you have to regret what you did. But these souls don't regret anything, they still think it was right and then they have to learn how to live with it. You saw what has happened before, it‘s dangerous place here. A moment of hesitation and you can die. They can kill you. Or worse.“

I wanted to ask him what is worse than be killed and I was afraid of the answer.

„Everyone here are alone but there are also those who understand that if they want to survive, they have to stay together and fight together. Leaders began to build armies of souls and they want to recruit more of them.“

 An army of death souls? Seriously?

It was getting worse. It was just not fair! Like I hadn't had enough bullshit to deal with lately?

„I need to find him!“

„Him? Who?“

„My father! I came here because of him, I have to bring him back.“

„Bring him back? You can‘t bring him back. You can‘t go back.“ he looked at me like I was crazy. And maybe I really was.

„Wait. What do you mean you came here? You died and your soul came here.“

„No.“ I shook my head. „I came here by one spell. I am alive, I mean... my body is alive.“

He was speechless and he started laughing. „Good performance. You should join the Drama club.“

„Thanks, but I have enough drama in my life.“

„Oh God. You are not joking, are you? You really came here by some spell?“

I nodded.

I have to find my father as fast as I can. This is worse that I thought. What have I gotten myself into? And now, there is no way back...
