After dinner we spontaneously decide to go bowling. I happily come in second place to Isaac. He seems to be the best at everything. He’s the smartest, most athletic, funniest and fittest, best looking. I’m slightly glad I’m not a guy because I would be seriously threatened by the kid! Then again, his girlfriend is his female clone. She too is the best at everything. The best thing about it though, is that neither of them makes the others feel any less significant. It just goes to show that in this group, friendship really is the most important thing!

On the way home Nyla and Mike have switched with Nay and Cameron. I glace over to my best friend. She and Cameron are talking about something that I can’t quite here but when she laughs, he laughs with her, studying her face as they smile. A smile spreads on my lips, but I feel it disappear just as fast when a pang of emptiness strikes my heart. Rhys.

As my thoughts start to focus on all things Rhys, Nay jumps and as a chain reaction, causes me to do the same.

“Mia! Crap, I just remembered, you have to call Rhys!”

My phone. I hadn’t checked it since I took it off charge at Rhys’s house before we left. I put it in my pocket before we left earlier, but I think it was off. I push myself up and retrieve it from my pocket. I hold the power button and wait as it sets itself up. Suddenly my phone is being assaulted in my hands. It keeps vibrating as the messages flow through. Once it finally calms, I pull down the notification window to discover that I have 127 texts, 23 voice mails and 54 missed calls.

“You’ve got to be kidding!” I say softly.

“I’m sorry. I totally forgot. He’s being trying to call you since we landed and when he couldn’t get you, he called me. He told me to tell you to call him as soon as you wake up, but I must have let excitement get the best of me.” Nay explains apologetically.

“It’s okay Nay! It isn’t your fault. He’s probably mad at me not you and I personally don’t mind that you didn’t tell me. Poor kid probably thinks that I am in a freaking coma!” I slightly laugh at my last comment. I can just imagine Rhys sitting in his room, or lounge panicking because I haven’t called, or texted, or even Facebooked him. Nay laughs nervously but I just nudge her slightly. “It’s ok. I’ll call him now. It’ll be fine!”

She nods and Isaac turns the music down. I begin to type in his mobile number when I’m interrupted by Nay.

“Oh and call his home phone. His mobile isn’t exactly in tack at the moment.”

“What did he do?” I ask.

“Well, as you can imagine, he got frustrated. He took it out on the phone and let’s just say there’s probably going to be a new painting on the wall when we get home.”

I don’t know whether that is the funniest thing I’ve heard today, or the most concerning. I dial his home phone. I’m probably going to wake him, but I think he’d appreciate the peace of mind. My reception is faulty and although the call isn’t breaking, it’s too soft to hear against my ear. I place the phone on loud speaker and it begins to ring.

“MIA?” A panicked voice answers on the first ring.

“Hey. Listen I’m really sorry I didn’t call, i-.”

“Mia,” He lets out a sigh of relief. He sounds like he just had a heart attack… ten times over.

“Rhys, are you ok?” I ask.

“Yeah I’m fine. It’s just I’ve been so worried all day! Firstly, you didn’t text or call when you landed like you promised! Then you didn’t pick up when I tried calling. That’s when Nay told me you were asleep. So at 5 o’clock in the afternoon, when you really should’ve been awake and therefore called, I panicked.
