Leaving

Kaitlynn got up early in the morning. She needed to hide the letters in the little suitcase; her father had packed for her after she went to bed yesterday. She had heard him coming into her room, to get some dresses for her. Maybe he finally wanted to believe that she won’t get killed, but maybe he did this for a much sadder reason.

The little girl tiptoed out of her bedroom into the small kitchen to hide the letters she had pressed against her chest with her hands, her fingers nearly too short to hold the envelopes. She had to be as quiet as possible. Her father was under no circumstances to know about them. No one was. That’s what Jase told her and she knew he was right. She knew a lot for a six-year-old.

That’s what most people in the village found strange. How could such a little girl like Kaitlynn know nearly as much as the eldest in the whole town? The answer was easy. Jase taught her everything. He had a great education because of what he was, who he was, and used this to enable Kaitlynn nearly the same amount of education. She enjoyed learning with him. They started about a year ago and he already taught her half of the alphabet. She couldn’t wait to be able to read the letters herself.

“Kaitlynn? Why are you up already?” The sleepy voice of her father interrupted her thoughts of Jase. Kaitlynn turned around a huge grin on her face. She loved her father, especially when he just woke up. His hair always looked messy when he just got up and it was something she just adored about him. She ran up to him to run her finger through his hair like she did everyday, but he didn’t lean down like usual, instead he just stood there as if he was made out of stone.

“Marc, get her dressed up. She needs to go soon.” Kaitlynn turned around when she heard the voice behind her. In the doorframe there was someone standing, his head hanging sadly. It took her some time to recognize the person. It was the Major, dressed up as beautiful as always when he brought a sacrifice to the monster. Behind his back the sun was about to rise, painting the dark black suit he had put on in a nicer looking grey. Kaitlynn turned back to her father and noticed she was still holding the letters in her little hands.

“Daddy, help me get dressed up!” she still smiled her lovely smile as she put the letters into the suitcase, and walked up to her still frozen father. She took his hand, to pull him to her bedroom with her but he didn’t move an inch.

“Why are you already here? She won’t leave until noon.” His voice was cracked and cold. Kaitlynn had never seen her father like this. He was a completely different person.

“We don’t need everyone to watch her go, do we?” The major had the hint of a smile on his face as he looked from Kaitlynn to her father and back to her. “Now help her dress up. Most of the people are still asleep so we could get her out of the village without everybody watching. That’s what you want too, isn’t it?”

His voice was calm and sad at the same time. It seemed like the Major wasn’t distressed by the imposing events but he was. He had to break a promise; he had to kill a little girl.

Marc looked at his beloved child. Why did God have to take everyone he loved away? Why? As if his life wasn’t already miserable enough. His wife died six years ago and now the child she died for would die too. It wasn’t fair. Normally a family sent only one person to the monster every fifty to sixty years but he lost the two most precious humans in life in six years. That wasn’t fair, it was horrible.

“Daddy? Everything okay?” He shook his head to clear away his horrible thoughts. It was something he couldn’t bear to think of anymore. It only killed him inside. He took Kaitlynns’ hand and guided her to her bedroom to help her put on the new dress.

(A/N: I’m gonna jump to where she’s wearing the dress already)

“You look great sweetheart.” Marc’s voice was still close to breaking but he tried to stay strong. He had to. For his child… For his wife.

The little girl looked up at him and smiled happily. She never got such a beautiful present from anyone. Her father was just amazing.

“I love you daddy!” the little girl squealed while her father picked her up again. It was the last time he would be able to do that. From tomorrow on she would be gone and she will never come back. It was frustrating to both of them.

“Come on, let’s go back outside.” The little girl squealed again as her father tapped her nose. She knew she was his little girl, daddy’s girl, but she also knew that she had to leave him to see her mother. And she wanted to see her very bad. She never wanted anything as much as she wanted to meet her mother. She had always felt like something was missing in her life and now she finally understood what it was. Her mother.

Marc carried his daughter back to the living room. The Major looked at them sadly. He knew how it was to lose a child. He had to sacrifice his own son two years ago. The villagers didn’t know about it though, his son was a secret child no one knew about. Except him and his son’s mother no one knew who the father was. Not even their child.

He sighed. Why did he have to sacrifice a child? He asked himself the same question when he first walked into the room where the newborn Kaitlynn was. The villagers said that they don’t need, don’t want the newborn child so he had to sacrifice it. He already knew that he would break the parent’s hearts, but he had no idea that Martha would offer to go instead of her child. It was a selfless act. Something no-one had ever done before. For that, he admired Martha.

“Are you ready to leave Kaitlynn?” He bent his knees to bring himself to level with her face. He wanted to check if there really wasn’t the slightest bit of fear in her eyes and it was like he thought. She wasn’t afraid. She wasn’t even really sad.

Her big, blue eyes looked straight at him, sparkling. She was about to say something when her father suddenly hugged her from behind, tears running down his cheeks. He was strong for such a long time but now he couldn’t hold it back anymore. He needed to let all his feelings out.

Kryl took Kaitlynns’ hand. “You’re a really brave little girl, you know that right? Well, even the bravest little girl has to cry sometimes. We’re going to leave in five minutes and you’re never going to see your father again…” He didn’t need to tell her that she could cry now. She understood it. Tears welled up in her eyes, filling them slowly, making her see everything through a curtain of water. She turned around and hugged her father, tears running down her cheeks now. This was the last time she would see him. From now on she would live in the castle with her mother. Of course she looked forward to this, still it made her sad to know that she’ll never see her father, the man who raised her, ever again.

“Bye daddy. I love you.” She whispered in his ear, making him cry even more. Marc kept asking himself why he had to lose everything. He never had a happy live, but losing someone this important to you is something more terrible than you can imagine.

“Bye Kaitlynn. I love you too, so much.” He let go a sob as his daughter pulled back. She had to leave now to make it easier for him. He would overcome his loss when she was gone long enough. She was just six years old so they didn’t spend too much time together, he should be able to forget it. Even if it would take some time. She knew he was a strong man. If Kaitlynn only knew how wrong she was.

“Okay, let’s go!” She said grabbing the Majors hand and pulling him to the door. She wiped the last evidence of her tears off her face. She needed to be strong for her father. And she looked forward to living with Jase and her mother.

She turned around and threw her curls over her shoulder. Tears were welling up in her eyes again. No, she couldn’t cry again. Her father wouldn’t be able to take it and Kaitlynn knew that.

One last time she looked at her beloved father and whispered a last: “Bye daddy.” Before she was guided up to the castle by the Major.

This wasn’t the time to be sad. It was the start of a new life for her, A new life with Jase and her mother in the castle. A new life without her father. A last tear rolled down her cheek. A completely new life.
