As soon as she entered the castle Kaitlynn felt misplaced. It was like a whole other world. She felt lost in the huge entrance hall. She stood there completely alone, holding a suitcase in her small hand. The blue dress shimmered as the sun continued to rise, the light shining in through a nearby window, lighting up the dark room.
“They sent a little child? Are they going insane?” Kaitlynn spun around looking straight into the monsters eyes. They were of a red that could let your blood freeze in your veins. It’s gaze was piercing, scanning the little girl as she stood there, unable to move, scared to look away from these eyes. It was like they would shoot flames at her if she did.
Suddenly they turned into the darkest and deepest black Kaitlynn had ever seen. She shook her head and looked away from the so called monster. Her gaze went around the room. She tried to remember every single detail. She scanned the room for about three minutes, before she looked at the monster again.
He didn’t seem to be old. About thirty, but of course he was a half-dragon and half-dragons aged hundred times slower than a human. She could tell he really was very old as he had a wise look in his eyes. He had wings and a dragon tail. The wings were huge and black, coming out of the part of his back where his shoulder blades were, the tail was the same color as the wings but had some pretty gruesome looking scars.
“You don’t seem to be bad.” She stated, smiling at the creature in front of her. The half-dragon had a startled look on his face. Did this little girl just say he didn’t seem to be bad? He had dragon wings and a tail, his eyes, when he changed into dragon form, were crimson red. Everyone feared him because of how he looked. What was wrong with this little girl?
“I am bad. Don’t you see me? How can a creature like me not be bad?” he hissed through his teeth which made Kaitlynn take a step back.
“There’s no reason to be rude.” She said repeating something she heard her father say some time ago while stepping forward again.
“I’m Kaitlynn.” She smiled her big, bright smile at the monster. He wasn’t bad. He thought he was because he was different, but in reality he was a nice guy. People just misunderstood him.
The monster kept staring at the little girl when suddenly a voice interrupted his staring
“Aros? Where are you?” Kaitlynn turned her head towards the voice, knowing exactly who just spoke.
“Entrance hall.” The monster replied bored. He also looked in the direction from where the voice came from before he looked back at the little girl standing in front of him, still holding her little suitcase in her hand.
“Kaitlynn? What are you doing here?” Kaitlynn didn’t look back at the monster. She kept staring at the person that came down the wide stairway at the other end of the hall. Jase ran the stairs down, a surprised expression on his face. His black hair shimmered in the light, exactly like the monsters hair. Were they related? It had to be. They looked so similar. Like father and son. And you have to think, the monster was a half-dragon and Jase was a quarter-dragon, so they nearly had to be related because there were no other half-dragons in a radius of hundreds of miles.
“Jase!” Kaitlynn squealed excited and ran up to the boy to hug him. He let her hug him but still had a puzzled expression on his face. He looked at his father, the monster, and asked him why Kaitlynn was here. He spoke with his eyes, he only had to just look at Aros and he understood the question immediately.
“She’s this year’s sacrifice…” The half-dragon was already tired. He normally slept all day and was up at night but when a sacrifice came he spent the day awake. Jase looked down at Kaitlynn and pushed her back.
