Hailee's POV

When I was 15, I watched When Harry Met Sally for the first time. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan play 2 friends who, after many years, realize that they love each other.

My favourite quote comes from this movie and it's relevant to me now more than ever.

"When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want to start the rest of your life as soon as possible."

I was sitting with Nick on the hood of his car in a huge field outside the city in the middle of the day. Things are really good for us right now and I realize that I could spend the rest of my life like this.

Let's start as soon as possible.

"Saturdays have always been my least favourite day of the week", I said.

"Why is that?", Nick asks me as he pulls me into his chest.

"Because you're busy throughout the week and Saturday is when everything slows down", I answered.

"Isn't that a good thing?"

"Well maybe for some people. I think that being busy during the week distracts me from my problems and when the weekend comes, they all come out of hiding."

"You're lucky if you can be distracted from your problems", Nick says. He sighs and pulls me closer to him.

"Yeah, I guess so."

After a while, we decide to get in his car and drive home. The drive back into the city is peaceful. But I wish we could have stayed in that field all day. Not because it was bliss out there, but because our problems were about to come out of hiding.

Nick's POV

I'm driving back into the city with Hailee in the passenger seat. I'm holding her hand while my other hand is on the steering wheel.

All is well... But of course, I spoke too soon.

I hear sirens from a police car blare behind me.

"Crap", I mutter under my breath.

"What the heck?", Hailee says, sounding concerned. "You aren't speeding, are you?"

I wasn't speeding. The red lights were visible in my mirror so I pulled over to the side of the road.

A cop came to my open window.

"Are you Nick Robinson?", the cop asked.

"Umm yeah. What is this about?", I asked.

"Nick Robinson, you're under arrest for the selling of illegal drugs. Please step out of the car."

"Wait what?", I said as I stepped out of the car. Hailee did the same.

"Are you serious?", she asked.

"I am now going to read you your rights", the cop said, but I wasn't listening. I was too focused on the cold metal handcuffs that were locking my hands together behind my back. I was too focused on Hailee's terrified face.

Everything else was a blur.

"You have the right to stay silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law."

I couldn't even say the words if I wanted to. The cop pushed me into the back of his police car and closed the door.

I could see Hailee asking him questions through the window, but I couldn't hear her. I felt bad. We were finally together and happy. And I ruined it.

+ + + + + + + + + + +

"What is your sentence?", Hailee asked when I got out of court 3 days later.

"I'm being sent to juvie until I turn 18 and then I'm going to prison", I answered in a cold, automated voice. After 3 days the news still hadn't sunk in.

Hailee was too stunned to cry, I could tell. All the color drained from her face and she look scared to comfort me. Maybe I was on the verge of lashing out, I don't even know. I felt numb.

"How did they know?", Hailee whispered.

"Griffin ratted me out", Nick said. It was true. If Griffin and to go down, he'd drag me with him.

"So... when do you have to go?", Hailee said in a voice that was even quieter, if that was possible.

"Tomorrow."

That's when she lost it and burst into tears. I quickly moved forward and pulled her into a hug. She sobbed into my shirt for a long time and I let her, not knowing when I'd get to do this again.

"I really messed up, Hailee", I said as I rested my head on hers. "It's over for me."

Hailee pulled away to look me in the face. Her wet eyes stared into mine and guilt filled me all over again.

"What are you saying?", she asked, her voice shaking slightly.

"I'm not dragging you down with me", I answered.

"You're breaking up with me."

"I'm trying to protect you."

"We went over this!", she said loudly. "I don't need to be protected! Keeping me away from you won't keep me safe."

"Hailee, listen to me. I'm going to be gone for a long time. I can't ask you to wait for me. That's too much to ask. You didn't sign up for this."

"But-"

"No Hailee. You can't argue your way out of this."

"Nick, I'm not letting you do this."

"Yes. You are. I don't want to leave you, Hailee. But things are different now."

I watched as tears rolled down her cheeks. I reached out and wiped them away.

"It'll be okay", I whispered, trying to convince myself while I convinced her.
