I'm just a summer girl,
I wear my flip flops,
And when I let my hair down,
That's when the party starts.
So it's decided. Chanel, Ian and I are responsible for the decoration. Decorating the beach isn't easy. Last year was a downer, Chanel says, so we better pull up our socks. Sadly enough, Oliver and Claire aren't with me. They're stuck with the catering business. And I'm wedged between an over-hyper flirt and an uninterested jerk. It turns out Chanel's single; Sam, is just an on and off boyfriend- a plaything. Ian's interested has perked up now, and he's way more comfortable talking to her than he was with me. Gah. I'm now shoved to one side while my partners chat each other up. I don't see how her talks are interesting but, I guess they are, seeing how she and Ian are grinning from ear to ear.
'Uh-um.' I cough; interrupting the anecdote which recounted Chanel's first waxing experience. 'Can we get down to business? We have so much to do, right? And we have to do well this time.'
'I prefer getting to know my partner first. Only, then will we do a good job!' That sentence is evidently meant for Ian. He seems capable of no reaction but a small 'Uh, yes', and then goes back to Chanel, 'you were saying?'
'Call me once you guys are done.' I say, in a fit of anger. They seem unperturbed. I stalk over to where Cameron is. He's been a good-boy ever since, quietly playing in the sand after lunch. 'What's up, Cam? He looks up, his feet slightly jostling one of the castles he's built.
'You want to help?'
'Sure.' I crouch and start helping him pile up the heaps of sand. Cameron and I talk about mundane things as we build his empire. He tells me that he misses his family loads, and his friends too.
'Ian is awesome though, he told me not to tell anyone, but he always writes sick notes for me when I have football matches to attend outside school. He's a cool brother.'
I look at Ian, still in deep conversation with Chanel, but there's an expression of irritation set on his face. He looks bored. He catches me glancing at him and abruptly stands. 'Yes, okay, I'll come', he says as if I ever said anything to him. That actor. He starts to head towards us, and Chanel trails after him.
'You okay, buddy?' He asks Cameron.
Cam looks as confused as me, if not more. He just shrugs.
'We better get to work then', Ian says. 'Let's not dally around.'
And so we begin. We start with the basics - a list comprising of what we should begin with. The first thing that comes to our mind is- a banner. Ian agrees to paint a giant one, and I offer to help. You can see how bad Chanel wants to join in too, but she can't paint to save her life. Ian and I agree to make a head-start on the banner straightaway. Chanel's going to go to the mart today and buy all the streamers and balloons. So that's done. We're probably going to have to buy helium ones since they don't go out of air that easy. Which reminds us that we have to start collecting sponsorships and donations. And that we need an actual theme.
