THE QUIET

"I'm really sorry Phil," Sophie said.

"It's okay," Phil said, glad that she couldn't see how much of a lie that was through the phone.

"PJ says that he'll beat him up for you on Monday," she said in desperate attempt to cheer him up.

"No, don't do that," Phil said, "It's really nice of him but I don't wanna cause trouble."

"Dan's the one causing the trouble, breaking your heart!" Sophie cried, "Besides, what's the worst that could happen? Detention? It's not like PJ has a good track record anyway."

"It's not worth it," Phil insisted, "Dan's not worth it. I just want to carry on like normal."

"You're just gonna keep quiet about it? Sophie asked, shocked, "You're just gonna pretend like it never happened?"

"Yeah," Phil replied simply, "If he thinks none of it mattered to me maybe it'll hurt."

"I hope so," Sophie scowled, "He deserves it."

"Yeah he does."

"Hey, I've been holding up the line for a while," Phil said, "I'll talk to you tomorrow."

"Okay," Sophie replied, "You're sure you're okay?"

"Yeah," Phil lied.

"Kay," Sophie said, unsure, "See you tomorrow."

"Bye."
