Final part of Reckoning
Song for ending is
Sedated by Hozier
EvanDLThe late morning sun shines on the land, and fluffy clouds are scattered throughout the blue sky.
I finally reach the gates of Haven, the fleet of soldiers I was with already inside.
I walk in the middle of the road, with the bloody machete in my right hand.
I see Emma on the walkway of the wall and exclaim happily, "Shit! It's him! He's alive!"
She climbs down the ladder and slides open the gate.
I wipe my bloody mouth and step inside Haven.Once I walk inside the walls, Lauren and DJ immediately head towards me.
"Did you kill him?", Lauren asks me.
"It's done", I tell Lauren and DJ, walking away from them.
"What?", DJ asks confused, "David, is Nathaniel dead-""I said it's done!", I turn around and snap at them.
I turn back around down the street and see Grace standing there, her golden brown hair flowing in the breeze. She runs toward me and hugs me tight.
"Oh my god, I'm so glad you're alive. Are you hurt?", she whispers.
"I'm fine...really", I mumble.Cody and Theo see me and make their way to me. Matt trails behind them on crutches.
"Did we win?", Cody asks me.
"I'd say so, yes", I answer.
"Is that son of a bitch Nathaniel dead?", Theo asks in his British accent. I fall silent and look at the ground.
"Well? Is he?""It doesn't matter. We won", I mutter before walking away to the house.
"What's wrong with him?", I hear Matt whisper to Grace.
"I'll talk to him", Grace says to Matt. I walk up the porch of our two story house and head inside. Lisbeth was sitting in the window sill in the room when I first walk in. She stands up, sees the look in my eyes and asks, "You didn't kill my father...did you?"
I shake my head and walk upstairs.
Grace walks inside and follows me upstairs, glancing at Lisbeth.
I open the door to my bedroom and walk inside. I place the machete on my dresser, sit down on the bed, covering my face with my hands. Grace sees me and closes the door behind her.
She sits on the bed next to me, holding my left hand as I remove from my face.
"What happened out there?", she asks me, her glistening hazel eyes looking into mine.
"Nathaniel...I couldn't kill him", I mumble."Why?"
"It was like you said, Grace", I tell her, "I had to be a better person."I continue, "After today, I realize that...I don't want this to be my life anymore. I couldn't kill Nathaniel despite all the horrible things he did. But after the hunters, Anthony, Jesse...I've figured out that...I don't want to kill people anymore..."
Grace places both of her hands on my left hand and says, "Before today, I never knew how hard it was to kill another human being, but when I killed Richard I finally knew."
"We're safe here, David. So I know that this is the right choice", Grace tells me.
"Thank you", I say to her. She rests her head on my shoulder as we hold hands. After a few moments she stands up and says, "We should go tell the others what you think."
She exits the bedroom.
I get up from the bed and walk over to the window.
I know this life is difficult, but I push through, just like I always should. After today, I deeply hope that Nathaniel never comes back to Haven.
I open the bedroom door to walk out, but before I do I take one last look at the machete, sitting on my dresser.
"Make no enemies", I whisper before walking out of the room.
