Chapter 4
Amber sighed happily as Wilbur held her waist while they chose the wedding bands. As they wanted a small party for the actual day, she wanted to keep most of the money towards the baby funds. Wilbur wanted to spend more on a good wedding ring but she refused, hence, they were choosing those on sale and Amber found one that was plain with a 0.3 carat diamond. Wilbur sighed inwardly. His idea of a grand wedding ring would have to wait till their first anniversary.
The sales girl was smiling all the time and patiently brought out the rings that he requested. “Wilbur, please just choose one.” Amber sounded slightly irritated. Wilbur nodded and finally chose one that would match hers. With the purchase of the rings done, the next stop would be the wedding venue selection. Wilbur’s mother was to meet them for the selection and when she reached, Amber smiled politely.
Her mother-in-law, on the other hand, was so excited about the wedding that she kept talking and giving opinions with every venue. When they showed her the last hotel, she said, “That’s all?”
“Mother, that was the 50th choice you said ‘No’. Which hotel then?” Wilbur sounded tired. Indeed, they had spent more than three hours and none of the venues had suited Mrs Kong.
“There should be all, don’t tell me that there are only 50 places in Singapore,” she frowned.
“Mother, it’s a small wedding, we are not inviting the whole of Singapore,” Wilbur was frustrated. Even if his mother was happy with the wedding, he simply needed her approval for a venue, not opinions about the unnecessary issues like rude staff, staff changes so often at such places that he doubt they would still be there at the wedding.
“Oh.”
“Mrs Kong, these are the best hotels and restaurants that we can find, I’m sure we can hold our wedding in any of them,” Amber smiled, “I’m sure you will help us choose the best place to hold the wedding.” It was the magic words and Mrs Kong smiled, flattered by Amber. The location was picked in less than one minute. Wilbur heaved a sigh of relief, giving thanks fervently that he was going to marry the best woman in the world.
As the wedding date was rather near, Wilbur worried that it would be impossible to book the venue, to his surprise, the manager informed him that the place was available. He was glad that the auspicious date that his mother had picked was truly a blessing. It was also a blessing that his mother didn’t mind the hurried marriage, it was as if she wished to see him get married, the earlier, the better.
Mrs Kong was relieved that her son was going to get married. She wanted to hold her precious grandchild soon and had always liked Amber. Despite the small fact that it was still a shotgun marriage, she was going to hold a precious grandchild in just a few months. She did, however, thought about her nosy neighbours who would spread the news like wildfire. Sighing, there was nothing she could do about the wagging tongues and prayed that Amber would be able to take it in her stride or just ignore them.
Amber was feeling tired from the trip. The ring and venue selection had drained her, knowing that her first trimester was just a taste of what would happen to her in the following months, she stifled a yawn. Wilbur didn’t miss it and decided firmly that it was time to send her home. Mrs Kong agreed. Two against one, no fair, thought Amber. However, she obeyed them.
The flat was dark and Amber wondered where her brother was. He had been home late for the past few weeks and she hadn’t noticed till now. Something had been bothering him and she was so caught up with her pregnancy and wedding that she had neglected her beloved elder brother. Hearing the door unlocked, she turned towards Ace.
“Big brother!”
“Oof! Amber,” he choked at her tight grip, “I. Can’t. Breathe.”
Letting go, she beamed. “I’m so sorry, I know you have some troubles but I was so busy with my wedding and all.” She stopped in mid-sentence.
