Chapter 6

“Mysti, you’re awake.” Ace helped her sit. “How are you feeling?”

“A slight headache, what time is it?” She adjusted herself more comfortably.

Ace stared at her, it was broad daylight, if she asked the question, it meant that the pressure was on her nerves again. “It’s morning.”

Mysti didn’t react. When she finally did, it felt like an eternity to Ace, she smiled, “So, where’s my breakfast?” Ace stood up and patted her arm and pushed the tray towards her, guiding her hand. “It smells good, what is it?”

“Porridge, Doctor Yang said you shouldn’t be eating solid food for now. Light meals only.”

Scrounging her nose, Mysti began eating slowly. “Ace?” when she was done. He placed his hand on hers, unable to answer her. “It’s just back to before. I can still walk, you know. Now, I can remember your face.” She gave a bright smile. Silently, he hugged her fiercely.

“Ace?” someone was in the ward. Breaking apart, Ace turned towards the voice. Linda was on the verge of crying, “You, why are you here?” asking the obvious.

“Linda.” Ace sounded hoarse.

“Why are you here?” Linda repeated.

“Mysti,” he replied simply as if that answered her question.

Linda pursed her lips before speaking, “Are the two of you...”

“Yes!” Ace answered hurriedly and held Mysti’s hand tightly. He felt Mysti struggled but he held on. He was afraid that Linda would want patch things up again. Ever since their meet up at the columbarium, she had been calling him and appearing at the places he worked. He wasn’t sure what she wanted or even why but what happened in the past had let him know that things were over between Linda and him.

“I see, Ace, can... can we talk?” Linda looked at him pleadingly.

He didn’t answer immediately but Mysti whispered to his ear, “Go. I think you have to resolve this.” Ace battled internally, he didn’t want to leave her but it was truly time to clear the air, things between him and Linda had never been really settled and he gave Mysti a light peck on her lips before promising to return as soon as possible. Mysti smiled gently, knowing that he was still looking at her and waved him away. Hearing the footsteps fading, she readjusted herself to lay down and fell asleep.

Ace returned during lunch and his heart gave a small lurch at the sight of her finishing her meal. She was grimacing at the end, still unaware that he had returned. Before he made a move, he saw her tilt her head and grinned.

“Hey,” he grabbed a chair and sat beside her bed. “Good lunch?” He laughed when she gave him a face.

“I wish. Is Aunt Trish alright?” she wiped her mouth with the tissue he passed her.

“She was relieved that you are now okay. Although, she did mentioned something about me sending you to the hospital every now and then,” he chuckled.

“It’s not the first time.”

“I know.”

“Ace, this happened before I met you.”

“A lot of times?” he was incredulous.

“Yes. Only this time, it’s more severe,” wincing at the thought. “I have been on medication since then. I take only when necessary. They aren’t exactly nice,” she added wryly.

Ace held onto her arm silently. He found himself hearing her saying something about being with him, “Sorry, what did you say?”

“I said, I don’t know if you can even stay with me. All my medications and fainting spells.”
