Chapter seven

•• May 1, 2013

For the past few days, Jeff hasn't been around much. If I recall correctly, he wasn't here at all yesterday. I waited and waited for him all day. I invited him to a night picnic, as cheesy as it sounds. Maybe he thought it was stupid. Maybe he's mad at me for something. Maybe he's just a figment of my imagination. I wouldn't be surprised if he was.

But I felt him. He has to be real. I really did feel him. I felt his skin, his scars, and his warmth.

But I also felt him the first night when he had sex with me..... I can't talk about this anymore. I don't think he's real. He might be, I don't know. Maybe someone is constantly slipping some sort of acid into the air I breathe, since I haven't had any thing to eat. It's not like I have the need to eat. Or at least I haven't since he first came. Four days without any food at all.

The thing is, I don't even see him in my dreams anymore. I dream of the building , and I sit in his cell on his couch, and I hold his hoodie. It doesn't feel very warm anymore. It doesn't feel like Jeff's. it's as if its just a hoodie someone wore once and then kept in the back of their closet.

I keep seeing this creature though. And it's not Smile. It's small and furry, I think. It's always scurrying around, so I never had enough time to catch a glance of it.

Anyway, Smile is good company. He's nice to me now. The thing is, he hasn't even seen Jeff. I comfort Smile in my dreams, and the day before yesterday, he came over at night because he felt alone. I never thought a talking dog would've come in handy so much. I take him for walks, but to hide his identity, he wears a muzzle. As embarrassing as it may be, he loves going out with me. ••

I felt a nudge on my leg. It was smile.

"Good morning, Shiloh," he said with a yawn and a laid back stretch,"Sleep well?"

"Yeah, thanks for asking." I patted my bed and he jumped up and scratched behind his ears. He smiled. It's so adorable now. Especially when you scratch him.

"Hey Smile," I ask, "Do you think he's mad at me for something?"

"Ah, right there right there right there!"

I stopped scratching and looked worried.

He used his paws to scratch by his ear and looked back.

"Jeffery wouldn't leave because he's mad at you. He's most likely just having fun and playing around with other girls as usual."

Other girls?

What about everything he said to me? He said I was different. I was connected to him. He called me "his" "beautiful" girl.

My head hung. I was a fool for believing that a boy would like me. I should have listened to my mother when she told me I was a laughing stock to the male race. He probably slept with some girls and told them some ugly fat chick really fell for him.

How hilarious.

"Are you okay, child?" The dog looked up and said, tilting his head.

I smiled "oh, yeah. Heh, I'm fine."

If anyone could fake a smile, it's me.

"Might we go for breakfast?" Smile asked.

At least I have this dog as a friend.

Speaking of friends, I haven't heard from Brittany in a while. I might stop by there after breakfast and tell her that Jeff stopped coming by.

I put on Smile's muzzle and walked out holding the door. Apparently, he doesn't do leashes. And I don't own one.

We walked outside, there was still a ocean breeze blowing in, so I grabbed a sweater. I walked out and felt my pockets for money and wouldn't you know, I found my phone. AND a few hundred dollars. Perfect.

As we walked, Smile talked about what he might want to eat. He was excited. I could tell because he jumped up a few times and was speaking quite quickly. But my mind drifted as I checked my phone. 37 missed calls and 92 texts. Why couldn't people care this much before I was held hostage by an imaginary killer?

"Where do you want to go Smile?"

I paused.

He looked at me with an excited puppy pant and jumped on his hind legs, leaning against me with his hands on my shoulders.

"MAYBE WE COULD GO FOR PIZZA OR IS IT TOO EARLY OR WE COULD GO TO THAT BURRITO PLACE BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'D WANT BUT WE COULD ALSO GO TO THAT MORNING DINER I CHOSE THE MORNING DINER!!!"

I laughed and patted his head "Okay okay!! Haha, we'll go to the Morning Diner. Then we can go to the dock if you want. "

Smile was extremely excited. He laid on the sidewalk and rolled around. "Jeff never takes me out places like diners or parks or anything. It's nice to finally go out and do things."

Poor Smile. "Cherish this time while you have it. I don't know when Jeff will notice you're gone. Soon, most likely." I said.

"Jeff doesn't... Check on me often." He said Whispering. "Or at all for that matter..."

Smile walked to the door of the Morning Diner and I opened it, leading him in. I ordered a small breakfast sandwich and Smile got bacon and sausage - lots of it. The previous day's scraps. He was ecstatic. We went outside and ate out there. The only time he didn't talk much was when he was sleeping and eating. I ate half of the English muffin with eggs and sausage and let him have the rest.

"Thank you for the amazing food," he said as he licked his lips, "wanna walk to the dock?"

"Sounds good." I said as I stood and began walking to the dock.

••Where did the day go, well, it started off with me and Smile going to breakfast. Then the dock. He caught a goose or two, but spit them out. After that, he kept handing me sticks to throw him. The poor thing never got to be a puppy. Or a normal dog for that matter. After a walk around town, I walked to Brittany's house and there was no answer on the

Door or phone. Strange, she's usually always home or answering her cell. Oh well, I'll try again later. I think I'm gonna call my mom...••

I picked up my phone and called her.

It rang and rang, and rang. Until finally someone picked up with a friendly hello

"Hello? Mom?"

"Oh hey Shiloh. How is everything?"

She spoke so casually, I was sick to my stomach.

"Do you know where I am mom?"

"Yeah," she said matter of factly. "You're at home with that boy. The really pale one, right? The cute one?"

The cute one. Are you fucking serious?

"U-uh... Y-yeah I am. But um,"

"Why , do you need money or something hun, I can western union to the store if yo-"

"MOM. Where are you...?" I asked gravely.

She stopped and was serious.

"We're in Florence."

"ITALY?! Mom, you left the country?

"Only for a year, darling. I'll call you back, me and Ariel are going out." She hung up.

I stood there bewildered at the phone call.

I'm just about done with living right about now.

Not only is my mother gone, but I can't get a hold of my best friend and the guy who was madly "in love" with me is out fucking some other chick.

Nice....
