I sat strait up and fixed my hair and face the best I could with no mirror before I answered with a hoarse, "come in." I was met by a graying doctor who looked to be in his early to mid 60's and a small red headed nurse who looked to be in her mid 30's was right by his side. I extended my hand toward the doctor and shook his hand in a firm hand shake, which almost took my arm off if it had been any harder. The nurse went to go attend to Adian's wounds and the doctor ushered me aside. "Hello, I'm doctor Newbury. You must be Adian's fiancé; Olivia. His parents told me that you would be coming soon" the doctor finally answered. I stayed silent and waited for him to finish what he had to say, looking Doctor Newbury strait in his dark brown eyes I told him I was ready for him to continue. "Olivia, I've already told Adian's parents this and now it's your turn to know. This is always a hard thing to tell loved one's of the patient. As you already know Adain has been in a car accident and has sustained a severe head injury. He had blood swelling in his head that we had to drain. So far he's in stable condition, but... what we don't know if there is any further damage to his brain only time can tell.
Once again I felt my heart sink deep in my chest. That was the last straw for me, I couldn't take it anymore. "What do you mean 'time can only tell'! Isn't there some kind of fucking test you can do to tell if Adian will be ok?" I spat at the doctor with as much venom in my voice as possible. "There must be something you can do!" The nurse's head snapped up from the last gauze she was redressing on Adain and the doctors eyes widened in panic. The doctor held his hand out as if to say "I surrender." The doctor started to back up toward the door and all the while I held my anger filled gaze toward him. As he reached toward the door handle a spat out "Yeah. What don't you just leave since you can't even help me! Why do you even work here...if you can't even do your job!" Then I swiveled my head toward the nurse and snapped at her "and you when you're done dressing his wounds, get the hell away from this room!" The nurse's eyes widened in fear and all she could do was nod her head and hastily finished up with Adian's wounds.
With that the doctor swiftly opened the door and quickly closed it shut. I kept my eye on the nurse and about three minutes later she was done attending to Adian. On her way toward the door she kept her eyes on me and decided to stick to the walls in case I decided to physically attack her. " Who in the world does she think I am", I thought to myself. "Yeah, I might have verbally attacked them, but I'm not stupid enough to actually physically attack them." I huffed and then proceeded to pace back and forth in the hospital room. I picked up the conversation once again in my head and thought "What I did was wrong, no matter how much stress you are under you have no right to say what you said to those two people. You are going to have to apologize to them." I gave a heavy sign and ended the conversation with myself. I don't know what I was becoming, no I know damn well what was happening to me. I was becoming a monster, something I've avoided for years. Once again my monster was back.
I snapped out of my haze a slowly turned my head toward Adain lying in the hospital bed. I killed me to see him lying there so broken and unable to do anything for himself. I moved the strand of hair that fell in my face and went to go sit back in the chair next to the bed. I once again took Adain's lifeless hand and begin to sob. Look at Adian's face I began to have a one way conversation with him. "Adain please, I need you here with me. You're my other half and life just doesn't make since without you here next to me", I used my free hand to wipe away the tears that were falling down my face. " I ju-, I just need you to give me a sign that your still here with me... That you s-still know who I am. Just squeeze my hand, and I'll know everything's ok." I waited to see if anything would happen. There was sign. So I decided to lay my head back down and fall back asleep; allowing myself to go to a place where I wasn't in pain and unhappy.
The next time I was woken up there was no doctor or nurse. It was Adian's mother gently rubbing her hand over my back and soothingly telling me to wake up. "Olivia, come on, you've been here all night. Come on dear, I'll take you back home so we can get you bathed and fed." I groaned and turned my head toward her and slowly opened my eyes allowing the streaming sunlight to hit me in the face. I looked at Mrs. Connor bleary eye for a few seconds and reluctantly sat up and stretched. I quickly stood up, feeling a rush of blood flow from my head leaving me a bit disoriented. I heaved a heavy sigh and breathed to Mrs. Connor, "Do you mind if I use the restroom before we leave?" "Why of course, Olivia." Once again I stretched before walking off toward the bathroom. While is the bathroom I did what I had to do. After flushing the toilet I splashed my face with the cool faucet waters and then gargled the water to try warding off my morning breath the best I could. Then I pulled off another paper towel and wiped my face and turned off the light in the bathroom and exiting the bathroom.
When I came out of the bathroom, I saw Mrs. Connor standing over Adain caressing his face. The bathroom door had yet to close and I quickly stuck my hand in the door to keep it from slamming shut. I stood watching; drinking in the moment. I slowly leaned my head against the semi-shut door and tuned into what Mrs. Connor was saying. She was whispering sweet words to her son; her only son. As a matter of fact Adain was her only child. The more I thought of it the more my heart started to break. She was in just as much pain, if not more pain watching her only child in this state. I couldn't even began to fathom the amount of pain I would be in if I was in her place. After about a minute of listening, I shifted my weight to one foot which caused my ankle to make a strange but all too familiar popping noise due to all the stress put on that one foot. Mrs. Connor's head whipped up at the speed of lighting and in the same instance she dropped her hand from Adain's face and turned her body
"Oh, Olivia you scared the living day lights out of me" she said while putting her hand over her heart. "Olivia, how long have you been standing there?" she asked me. My eyes widened and I took my time to reply back. "Umm not long and I'm sorry for frightening you", I lazily replayed back. "Well, dear it ok. We have a lot to do today first we need to get you cleaned up and fed, then we need to go out and buy you some new clothes" she quickly shot back. We both took one last glance toward Adain before we head toward the door. I was once again back in the hallway of the hospital and passing the first floor help center. Mrs. Connor pressed the down button and readjusted her handbag that kept skidding of her shoulder. The elevator arrived on the first floor in about a minute, which already had 4 people in it. Getting into the elevator was a bit tricky, we both had to wedge and position ourselves just to fit in. The ride down to the ground floor wasn't as long as a remembered it to be. Me and Mrs. Connor where the first to get off and I stepped aside and held the door open from those who were getting on and off.
Right as we got to the exit of the door Mrs. Connor stopped me. "Oh, wait Olivia I need to find my sunglasses" she said while rummaging through her bottomless pit of a purse. She began to mumble to herself, the poor woman didn't even know that she had put her sunglasses on top of her head. I had never seen her this way, she always knew and remember everything. I lightly grabbed her hand and stopped her. "Mrs. Connor, your sunglasses are right here" I said with grabbing her sunglasses and bringing them down to her face. She looked at me and smiled back. "Thanks hon., I'm such a mess. I'm just all over the place." she said with a sigh. She went back in her purse and dug out her car keys to her Infiniti QX56. We glided toward the black car in a matter of seconds. Right as we got to the car she unlocked the car doors and hopped right into the seat and started the car.
