Year 500

The Ahtle rubbed his skeleton hands together in the dimness of his underwater cave. He could feel the people making their way towards him. They were the first this year to plead their case. He enjoyed these little sessions. They invariably happened every five hundred years, when the change of worlds took place.

The people never had any hope, but that's why he enjoyed it. The display of their human frailty was fascinating to him. He had no real understanding of people. Their time-limited lives, their petty concerns, and their urgent passions were largely a mystery to him.

Eternal life gave him a different perspective on matters, for better and for worse.

There was a hollow splash as human flesh hit water. Then figures emerged, standing on the cave's floor in the aqua water, their eyes wide and staring. The half-beings.

The Ahtle floated towards them, a smile playing over his shadowy face.

This was going to be interesting indeed.
