I am in hell.
Not literally, well not even close, yet the cheerful upbeat instrumentals, and my mother's melodic voice were giving me a headache.
It's far too early for this bullshit.
People were swaying in their seats, eyes closed, arms raised all trying to reach a higher being. I sighed as I stood near the back, scanning the room for one of my brothers. Spotting Trent, his arm wrapped around his wife, his hair tied back in one of those infamous man buns bobbing in time with his movements. Ross was standing beside them with his girlfriend, smiling happily at her as she sang. I was always the black sheep of the family, always being so different, I guess I'm like my dad in that way. It was better to stay behind.
I sighed and looked down at my black boots, scuffing at the ground, my skull singlet tucked into my black Skater skirt which swished with each kick of my foot. Eventually the music had stopped and everyone sat down at the pastor's command. I sat down twirling one of my purple locks, my eyes training on my inked forearm.
"Welcome to church everyone," Pastor Kane said happily , his Scottish accent ringing through the church, bouncing off the pews, "And welcome to all the new comers, Cheryl dear, could you please hand out the goodie bags," He smiled as his wife got up and began handing out orange bags.Once Cheryl reached me her smile broadened, yet she continued up to the front, whispering in her husband's ear... Great... I met my mother's eyes as she smiled smugly at me, her pale green eyes glinting dangerously from the stage, then her gaze shifted to the guy to her left... Issac Dermase.
I will admit that Issac is definitely gorgeous, his light brown hair and turquoise blue eyes are a significant match, he had always kept his hair swept to the side, a snap back always nestled in his curls in all honesty he looked like the Larry Stylinson love child. And his skill at playing guitar was also amazing, and since I have always been a sucker for a guy who can play an instrument, he became more attractive. The only thing unappealing is his density and lack of personality, he seems to have been brain washed by the word of God.
I sighed and looked at my mother as she sat with the rest of the Worship team. And then the service continued, everyone was given a small glass of blackcurrant juice and a cracker for communion, Pastor Kane continued to speak in God's name and then everyone ended in prayer.
Now time for the part I had been dreading. My mother sashayed towards me, her smile remaining smug. As she approached me I knew she would have all eyes on her. My mother is an average size woman, with long black hair, she's quite large woman but holds her weight well. She always catches attention where ever she goes, something that has always made me uncomfortable whenever in her company.
"Dianne how is the apartment? Is it all that you wanted darling?" my mother asked, her voice ringing through out the room so that who ever was close enough could hear what she had to say.
"It's great, I have a few more boxes to go through Olive, Rave and Lily are coming to help me this afternoon," I smiled nervously as I felt the weight of everyone's gaze on us, waiting to what her wild child would do next, probably trying to picture how bizarre my friends look.
I had noticed new and old faces around the room giving me discouraging looks as they took in my appearance, glancing sceptically at my sleeves, shaking their heads at my attire, obviously out of place. The last time I was here I was a clean skinned brunette who wore jeans and shirts that were too big for me, my brother's old shirts. Yeah I was so out of place.
Lost in my thoughts I had yet to realise that my brother Trent was talking to me, most likely to distract me from the judging stares, "Dee, how are you?" He asked pulling me into a hug. As he pulled away I looked at his wife and smiled brightly. Lora was Maori and Phillo, with short dark hair that had blue streaked through it, she was usually small and wispy, but pregnancy had taken its toll on her though she was still stunning and Trent watched her as though she were the moon in the night sky. She pulled me into a hug and returned the smile.
"I'm good, a little tired but good, how about you? Father to be," I laughed and looked between them. They shared a smile. They are so in love, high school sweethearts, love at first sight and all that nonsense. But they were happy and that's all that mattered.
Trent gave a kind laugh before replying, "I'm great, works a little rough but it pays well, especially with the family growing," Trent looked at Lora with a goofy smile, "It's really growing." Trent nodded encouragingly to Lora, and she practically radiated with joy.
"We're having twins!" Lora blurted, grinning, her hand hovering over her stomach. Trent was smiling so huge that it look as though his jaw would break. I could feel their excitement and I felt myself become giddy with the possibility of not one niece or nephew, but two. That happiness was short lived, as my mother approached with an attachment.
My eyes met with bright blue ones and I felt my stomach drop, "It's been a while, but your mother has kept us all updated on your endeavours." Issac stood in front of me, his eyes full of hope and his smile was wide.
I smiled nervously and nodded, "Mum I gotta go, I've made plans and the parlour is expecting to see some of my works in two hours and you know what traffic is like. Is it okay if I call you tomorrow and catch up?" I said quickly, draping my bag over my shoulder, quickly hugging my brothers before leaving. I wasn't prepared for my mother's guilt trip on my leaving early but I'll have to deal with it later.
