My eyes flutter open to sunlight gleaming into the cell. A moment of confusion takes over but is quickly replaced with the memories of yesterday. It feels strange to feel safe. "Safe" huh. That's a word I'm not used to. Sean is still asleep in my arms so u swaddle him up in the dusty prison pillow case. Daryl wasn't in the cell- probably with other members of his group. It was quiet. The silence was nice. Walker growls are a noise I've become a custom to so the peace was relaxing. I exit the cell now making my way slowly through the block humming softly into Sean's ear. I enter the cafeteria where members of the group are already scattered. Eyes make there way to me as I walk in. "Morning Luci." Rick says. Lori gestures a smile and waves. I smile back and make my way over to Rick.
"How did you sleep?"
He continues.
"Good. Well, great considering that's the closest I've had to a bed in a long while."
I respond. Lori and Rick both chuckle and smile warmly. I can see Lori smiling down at Sean.
"Lori, would you like to hold him?"
"I'd love to... Best get used to it considering I've got this little one on the way." She responds rubbing her belly.
I carefully hand my sleeping boy to her arms. Rick looks down at Sean now awake and smiling up at both of them. This could be part of Sean's new family. I think to myself. These people have been through a lot. As have I, I think I need them as much as they need me. This could be it. After a couple minutes I break the silence.
"Would you mind watching him just for a bit? I'd like to walk around to get a better look around the place- I-If you don't mind."
Rick seems a bit hesitant at first but gives in.
"I wouldn't mind a bit." Lori replies. She walks to the steps of the rusted stairs and sits on the first step while making cooing noises to Sean. I trust her. She's obviously done well with Carl I think she can handle an hour or two with baby Sean.
"Would you like someone to go with you?"
"Rick, all do respect, I'm just as capable of taking care of myself as you. I've been out there."
He nods. My statement seems to cut a little deeper than I expected. 'Being out there' is a lot. It doesn't things to you. It changes you. Rick understands
that as well as me.
________________
After a few minutes of making my way through the cafeteria and court yard, I arrive near the fences. I have no intention of leaving the prison but I just wanted to see this place for myself. I begin walking the perimeter of the fence near the cars. I bump into something hard and quickly reach for my knife but before reached it I heard "whoa there." I look up to see Daryl.
"Oh, you scared me! I'm sorry I thought you might be a walker."
"Ain't no walker." He gruffly replies.
"No shit." I reply still a bit startled. He just grunts and continues walking. But then he turns and pivots on his heel.
"Aye girly, where's that baby of yours."
"Lori is watching him for a bit while I take a walk." He just nods and keeps walking. Why is he worried about Sean? What does he care about my baby. _________________
