Degrante's POV

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!" I shouted.

"Shh," April scolded, leaning her ear closer to the box.

The voices on the other end were panicked. Shouts of alarm sounded over the top of the words.

"We can hear you, keep talking," April said calmly, "What's happening? Over."

"They're here... Thought we... Safe... Stay... Town... Too dangerous... Monsters."

The voices cut off with a strangled cry.

"Damn it!" April shouted, banging her palm on top of the box.

What did this mean? Monsters? Like the one I had encountered just this morning? The nightmarish creatures?

April pressed her forehead to the bench next to the box. The hand that clutched the speaker was shaking.

"What do they mean?" Darkblood asked innocently.

"There are monsters in the forest, I've seen them," I explained.

"What do they look like?" April questioned, a look of curiosity written on her face.

"They're very large, with huge fangs dripping poison, large talons, horrible breath. The sorts of creatures you would see in a nightmare," I murmured.

I normally kept to myself and preferred to be alone. This much attention was making me feel uneasy.

"Oh god. I think I know what you mean," April whispered, "I've been seeing monsters like that in my dreams."

"Me too!" Darkblood chimed in.

We all turned out eyes expectantly towards Trist.

"So have I," he muttered.

"Something bigger than us is at play here," I declared. Could it be the divines?

"So we're like chess pieces?" Darkblood inquired.

"What's chess?" Trist asked.

"It's a strategy game where you try and capture the other player's pieces," Darkblood explained.

"So... War?" Trist clarified.

"No...," Darkblood sighed, "it doesn't matter."

"You're right, it doesn't matter," I growled, "we're getting off topic."

"Well, what are we expected to do?" Darkblood moaned, draping himself over the dining chair.

"Well... um... April got the relic to do... stuff, so that's ... something," I tried to piece together information. Everything was too confusing.

"My guess is that we all hold some significance over our respective timelines," Darkblood spoke from underneath the table.

That boy just could not keep still, the whole time we'd been talking he had been constantly changing position. And what does he mean by timelines?

April seemed restless as well, she was constantly fiddling with the controls on the 'radio'. The static it emitted steadily grew in volume and then dropped again as she altered the frequency.

"So we all met for a reason. It wasn't just luck or a strange coincidence," I stated.

"Dunno," April shrugged.

She launched to her feet and began pacing the length of the kitchen.

"I don't know about you guys, but I think we need to find out some more information about what we're up against," she suggested.
