DANGER ZONE
CHAPTER TWO
The following morning, Alice was running late - again. She knew that it must have been making her punctuality appear to be horrid, but typically she wasn't always falling behind. This morning, her father had grilled her about being home by seven each night. Apparently he didn't enjoy her roaming the halls late at night. Apparently she could have no idea what kind of psycho was prowling around.
Her responses were consisting of 'great talk, but I have to go,' and 'let's do this later.' Of course, it took her another five minutes to get them off of her back. On top of this, they were continuously asking about what she was doing there. Asking if she knew about the drop ship that had left the Ark yesterday. As per usual, she had to lie and say that her line of expertise didn't fall there, when she knew far more about the drop ship than they could even imagine.
Scrambling out of her room, she tore down the hallway as she rather awkwardly tried to slip her badge on while run. Of course, she didn't cover much ground when a large, strong hand wrapped around her bicep, pulling her back.
A yelp escaped Alice's lips, and she skidded to a stop on her heels to see that it was Braxton holding her back. This was seriously not her morning and she was far too tempted to pop him. Of course, that would also resort in her getting arrested, and once again, jail is too scary for Alice's liking.
She was a good, law following citizen who liked to avoid Marcus Kane at all costs.
He grinned wildly at her, enjoying the frustration and anxiety oozing off of her. He lived for these days, the days where Alice slipped up. It wasn't weird, in his opinion. Alice always made a point to acknowledge Braxton's faults and stress. He was simply returning the favor.
"Running late?" he inquired, raising a black brow. His blue eyes twinkled at the sight of her scowl, fighting the urge to grin. "You know, they're not going to put up with this everyday. Might as well give up while you're only slightly behind."
On second thought, Alice was pretty sure she would be a good criminal. One punch to the nose and then bam, he'd be out like light. Maybe. It depended on if Alice was that strong. Alice didn't work out, Alice liked computers. But then again, it was the same for Braxton.
She shot him a glare, muttering, "Today's seriously not the day, Pierce."
Braxton released a low whistle, amused with himself. "Touchy spot, I take it."
Alice rolled her eyes, prying her arm out of his iron grip and taking off down the hallway. Braxton - well, being Braxton - chose to follow after her. If he didn't leave her alone, she was going to castrate him regardless of the penalty.
Yeah, she could handle jail.
No.
Wait.
Yeah, no.
"No, I just really need to go," Alice snapped, exiting their sector and making her way toward the restricted zone. Besides, she was rather terrified. She had yet to hear about what happened to Abby Griffin. Did Kane really float her? Just thinking about it made the breath deflate out of her.
Braxton hummed in thought, musing, "Well, you do look kind of pale. Worried about something?"
Making their way toward the door of the restricted sector, Alice whipped around to face him. "Maybe I'm just getting sick of hearing your voice." Nodding toward the scanner, she added on, "And this is as far as you go."
Braxton scowled bitterly as Alice swiped the key card of the pad, the door sliding open and the brunette slipping inside, leaving a scowling Braxton to himself. When the door shut behind her, she felt a sense of relief flood through her. Braxton always put her on edge, if she was being entirely honest.
