We didn't speak, we just ran. I jumped over branches and kept up with Robert. He had long legs so he always ran faster than me, darn him. The whole time I felt my stomach churning and I felt close to tears. This shouldn't have happened to him! We stopped a little way from the camp and crept slowly through the forest. We peered through the trees and didn't see that anything was out of place. It was quiet, a little too quiet. I realized I was holding my breath and then let it out slowly. Robert kept his hand on my shoulder and we both walked out slowly, making no noise what so ever. We went in through the back of the house and found that everyone was crowded inside, some looked really pale.
"What happened?" I managed to say, relief was clear in my voice. No one was hurt.
"He came back." Dianne whispered and her eyes met mine. She was scared and didn't deal well with zombies. She still had a hard time accepting Sam and Rick for what they were. I already knew who she was talking about so I just nodded and pulled her into a hug.
"Where did he go?" I whispered into her hair. She pointed out the window in the direction of the barn. We both nodded and Joe stepped out of the crowd.
"I'll go with you."
Silently we all began to walk out of the house in the direction of the barn. The number of fighters had noticeably decreased. All the zombie drama we had recently made sure of that.
"What do you think he wants?" Robert asked curiously as we scanned the area outside.
"Maybe help?" I said hopefully.
"Sam and Rick are in the barn." Joe said worried.
"They can take care of themselves, I'm sure." Robert replied quickly.
I nodded, agreeing silently and we entered the barn. We heard shuffling upstairs and stood still. The person upstairs was't aware of our presence. Since I was the lightest I went up the stairs first. Robert went last, since he was the biggest. I mean Joe wasn't puny, but he wasn't as muscled as Robert.
"Shit." I breathed as I saw what was upstairs. It was Mark, well I think it was Mark. He had his back turned to me but I knew what clothes he was buried in, I helped pick them out. The figure stiffened slightly and then turned around to look at me. The look in his eyes was human, yet dead. Some part of him was still in the body. His mouth was covered in blood and other things that I didn't want to concentrate on. It smiled at me grimly and then Joe came up. He shrieked slightly and then cowered in the other corner of the room. Robert was the last to come up and then he stood his ground behind me.
"Jesus." he spat.
"Mark, is that you?" I asked stupidly.
The thing stared at me and then seemed to process my words. It stared back at me and then talked.
"Yes, it is me I suppose." That wasn't what Mark had sounded like. Suddenly it's facial features changed and he looked like a scared child.
"Kill me, help me. Please Allison....I can't control it, I feel like-" suddenly he cut off and the dead look returned to his eyes. "You smell good." he purred and stumbled towards us a bit. Where were Sam and Rick? I glanced around and saw no sign on them. I felt Robert's body tense up behind me and held out my arm to stop him. I had to take care of this myself. Mark would have wanted me to help him. He wouldn't have wanted me to leave him like that.
"I'm sorry Mark, I have to do this."
"Do what?" he asked innocently and cocked his head to the side. That's all it took and I felt myself lowering my weapon. There were still some shred of Mark in there, a side that was fighting to be heard.
