"Stupid feet." I sighed as I finally took off my cast. I stood up slowly and then almost fell over but Mark held out his hand to steady me. I had been holed up in my room for the past three weeks since Robert left. Today was the first day I had let Mark visit me. He had tried....but I denied everyone who wanted to visit. Well except for Oscar and Sam. Whenever Sam came to visit me I had fun and could forget about Robert for at least a good twenty minutes.
"Well now you can walk." Mark smiled.
I looked over at him and shrugged. "Yup."
Sam walked into the room carrying my breakfast which consisted of cereal with water. We were still trying to figure out how to work with the cows. We had like two that had survived.....the other ones were another story. From what I heard they were chased out of the stalls by crazy zombified cows. I would have loved to experience that.
"Thanks." I mumbled. I looked up at Sam and she looked bored as hell.
"Anything new around here?" I asked.
"Nope." she popped the P and then turned to Mark. "Why exactly are you here?"
"I came to see how she was doing."
"No you came to be her rebound. Now beat it. It's girl time."
His mouth flew open and then he mumbled something about her being a bitch and walked out. I turned to Sam and we both cracked up at the same time.
"OH NO." I yelled, but it was to late. I lost my balance and I fell over landing on my ass. "Crap."
Sam was biting her lip trying hard not to laugh and I flicked her off. She finally let the laughter escape her and I scowled at her until I finally gave in and joined in. This was how it was for me and Sam. We could laugh for hours strait over the stupidest things ever. Like right now. We were laughing because I had fallen on my ass. Well I had to admit it was pretty funny.
I grabbed onto Sam's hand and heaved myself upward. Once I was standing up I took slow, hesitant steps. It was going to take a while before I could run or walk long distances. I really wanted to go to the strawberry field though. Maybe I could take Sam
Or wait until Robert came back
IF he came back. That was the thing that had been nagging at me. What if he doesn't come back. Even worse, what if he gets hurt?
Stop thinking that way!
Sam was staring at me with her eyebrows raised and then i smiled reassuringly.
"So whats up?" I asked trying to ease the tension.
"Well Joseph asked for another chance. But the thing is that I have been seeing Joe for a little time now and I really like him. But I feel like Joseph is a part of my old self. You know?"
And with that me and Sam had a heated argument about why she shouldn't go with Joseph. He was a douche that broke her heart by leaving her for another chick. He wasn't even worth her time. Joe on the other hand seemed sweat and I only knew him because he was the one that took care of my leg. He was cute though. He had short brown shaggy hair and tan skin. His eyes were a deep color of blue.
"I say Joe." I sighed and then sat down lotus position. I winced because I hadn't done it in a while.
"You think?" she asked uncertainly.
I nodded and then our conversation turned to the matter of Robert. I needed to get my mind off of him!
"I want to show you something." I said slowly and got up.
"what is it?" she asked curiously.
"Come on." I said and held out my hand. She took it hesitantly and I pulled on my shoes and equipment. I would never EVER leave without my weapons again. I had to learn the hard way...She watched me as I strapped on my crossbow and tied a mini machete to my waist. I pulled out Lenny's pistol and tucked it into the waist of my jeans. I know Joe had said I couldn't put alot of pressure on my leg so soon...but I was impatient. I couldn't just sit on my lazy ass and expect everything to get done for me.
I walked out of the room and peered through the hallways and then saw the coast was clear. I beckoned for Sam to follow. She crept behind me slowly and I was surprised when we were in the front of the house and we hadn't seen or run into anyone.
Weird...
I crept down the small dirt road I remembered and I didn't even need to look around. My feet knew the way and I felt like my mom was walking by my side. I could smell her perfume. Hear her laugh as I stumbled slightly on the uneven ground. I smiled to myself and then remembered Sam was by my side. I held out my hand and she linked her arm through mine.
"I want to show you this place. my mom used to always take me," I whispered. We were walking slowly and not making much process because we had to stop for my leg to rest.
"Are you sure?" she asked uncertainly but I could hear the excitement in her voice.
"Positive."
We continued walking and I saw the clearing first.
I saw the strawberries bright red against the green and I forgot about everything. I heard Sam gasp and then she ran forwards and pulled out a strawberry and shoved it in her mouth.
"These are good." she said with her mouth full. I laughed and then stepped forward. For some reason there was an odd smell in the field. I looked around and then I felt my eyes bug out of my head. There were tents set out in the distance and they looked abandoned. The thing that caught my attention was the blood splattered all over the light blue tents. I put my finger to my lips and then Sam turned to look at what I was staring at.
"Fuck." she muttered under her breath and then I pulled out my crossbow so it would be ready.
I crept forward first and all I felt was my heart beating in my chest. My leg was beginning to throb and I tried not to pay attention to it. Flies were buzzing like crazy and I slapped them away from my face. I got to an opening of the tent and used my crossbow to lightly open it.
There was a body on the floor and it was covered with flies. It looked like it had been decomposing for years and the skin was black and worn away. Half of the body was missing and its rotted intestines were spilled all over the floor. I tried hard not to gag but failed. Sam came up behind me, took on look inside the tent and vomited her strawberries out in five seconds. I tried hard not to grimace either when I heard movement. I turned, startled to the thing on the floor and held in the scream I felt. It was beginning to move slowly and the bones were cracking. Its eyes opened slowly and instead of meeting eyes they were two empty eye sockets. They eyes had rotted away.
"Oh hell naw." I muttered under my breath and shot it in the middle of the head. I turned around and Sam was still vomitting her guts out in the grass near by.
"Sam...come on. I don't know if there are more near by." I whispered to her urgently.
She nodded and then stumbled over to my side. We continued walking but all I saw was blood all over the grass. So much for the strawberry field. I sighed and held in the tears. This was one of the last memories I had left of my mom. And now it was ruined
I continued walking and then the sight I saw made me want to cry. Someone had hung themselves on a tree. The hair covered its face and I covered my nose to keep out the stench. The thing that confused me was that the dead I had been seeing had lab coats on....
I quickly jogged back to the tent and then peered inside ignoring the body and the guts all over the floor. There were papers and folders everywhere. I picked up what I could and then walked out.
"Sam we have to go." I said urgently.
She looked at me and then stumbled to my side. We walked quickly back to the house.
When we got there my legs almost gave out from under me. Mark was outside and looked worried and then relieved, but then worried again when he looked at our faces and hands.
We had alot of explaining to do
