"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MA!" I burst out greeting then eagerly blew the candle. Mom just stared at me. I thought she was displeased with my actions.
"I'm sorry, Ma. I'm so excited. I missed having a cake for your birthday," I sheepishly reasoned out as I sliced the yema cake then gave her a piece to her porcelain dessert plate. I also took a slice for me. She looked away the moment the electric fan blew a wind to her seat. I took a bit of cake and ate it.
The silence was deafening. I sighed as I think a best topic to converse with.
"Uhm... Y'know what, Ma? I met a girl last Wednesday. Her name is Iani. She's one of the coolest girl I've ever known. We have lots of things in common," I paused as I took another bit of cake. I proceed to talk albeit my mouth is full. "She's a cat lover. She loves to read factlets. She's also a writer, Ma. Actually, I asked her to be my mentor in writing fictitious stories and guess what? She said yes!" I said in an exhilarated manner.
Mom smiled but still staring on a direction away from my eyes. She's interested.
"And... I told her that I'm a bibliophile; that I love collecting and sniffing books because of their peculiar scent. At first, I thought she'll find it hideous but she said that it's normal. It's normal for two-legged bookworms like the two of us. And yes, Ma, she's also a bibliophile," I blushed.
I never took away my gaze to the century-old Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales which was lay open on the sofa on the other side of our coffee table. Its dull and fragile pages that is full of transparent sticky tapes was being flipped by the air blew by the fan.
"You'll love her, Ma. And she'll love you, too, like the way I do." I stood up and got the antique book. I hugged it as I begun to sob.
"You'll never be alone, Ma. Never. I love you to the moon and back," I said as I sniffed the scent of her.
