I spent the entire rest of the day, and the following day, in Command, begging them to let me talk to Finnick.
"It'll take five minutes, not even that," I told Plutarch the next day. He was the only sympathetic one, and as much as he wanted to let me talk to Finnick, Coin was completely against it. Of course.
The squad had spent their first three days in the Capitol filming themselves disabling pods on the streets. The had some sort of map telling them where the pods were, and they were commanded to disable as many of them as they could that lead to the center of the Capitol and President Snow's mansion. These days were fairly boring and uneventful.
On the fourth day, the squad started out disabling pods again. But one of them was mislabeled on the map, so they were unprepared for the metal darts that shot from it. One landed in the side of a girl's skull, killing her right away. I think they called her Leeg 2.
After that, the people in the Command room were in a panic. They promised Boggs, the commander of Squad 451, they'd send a replacement as soon as possible.
"We have no choice but to send Peeta in," Coin said, a hint of a smile on her face.
Haymitch laughed dryly. "You're kidding, right? You know what that'll do to Katniss."
"I don't care!"
Then Plutarch chimed in, "He might kill Katniss, Coin. And that can't happen yet."
"There are plenty of other soldiers on standby--" Haymitch began.
"No. I'm in charge, and I want Peeta sent in." And after Coin said that, everyone else was quiet.
They ran around, still giving off a stressful atmosphere, trying to get everything together to send Peeta to the Capitol. He was off by lunch, and arrived the next evening.
Thankfully I was in Command at the time, at Coin wasn't. Almost as soon as Peeta had arrived, Haymitch was on the phone with someone in the squad, presumably Katniss.
I grabbed him by the arm and said, "If you can talk to Katniss, I should be able to talk to Finnick."
Haymitch paused for a moment, looking at me like I was crazy, but that's how he looked at almost everyone. Then he called Plutarch over and made him get in contact with Finnick. It took about ten minutes.
"Hello?" his sweet voice said, sounding kind of scared. Guess nobody told him it was me.
"Finnick," I said with a sigh of relief.
"Annie! How are you doing?"
"I mean, I guess I've been better. How about you?"
The majority of our conversation went back and forth like that. We told each other what we'd been doing, him obviously trying to downgrade it to prevent from scaring me. After about five minutes, I heard someone yelling in the background.
"Annie, I'm sorry but I've got to go," Finnick said.
"It's alright, I guess." And just as I was about to say goodbye, I remembered the whole reason I wanted to talk to him in the first place. "Oh, wait! I have to tell you something."
"Sure, what is it?"
"Well..." I paused for a moment. I hadn't really thought about how I would tell him, and I still didn't really know. So I just said it. "I'm pregnant."
There was a pause on the other end of the phone. "You are?"
"Yeah. I've been trying to call for days to tell you."
Another pause. Then he laughed, "That's amazing, Annie! Now you'll have someone to keep you company while I'm gone."
"I know. I just really miss you already."
"I miss you too, sweetheart. So much." More yelling in the background. "I really gotta go. But I'll see you soon, alright? And make sure you take care of yourself. For the baby's sake."
I laughed lightly. "I will. I'll see you soon."
"I love you, Annie."
"I love you too, Finnick."
And the line went dead.
Those four words rang over and over in my head. I'll see you soon, I'll see you soon. The thought of having him back, of raising a family with him, made me smile uncontrollably. I even cried a little, but they were happy tears. I handed the phone back to Plutarch and sat down against the wall. I rubbed my stomach gently, back and forth.
I'll see you soon.
Finnick's POV's
I knew Boggs continued to call for me to go over tomorrow's plans, but after I got off the phone with Annie, I sat on the ground with my head in my hands. This wasn't happening, this can't be happening.
If Annie was pregnant, that meant I had to get home to her. I didn't want to scare her, but I just didn't know if coming home was a possibility. But now I had to find some way to. A tear rolled down my cheek.
"Finnick?" Katniss came up from behind. I jumped a little. "Are you alright?"
I raised my head up and wiped my face. "Yeah, I'm fine."
She sat down next to me. "Did you talk to Annie?" And after I nodded, she added, "How is she doing?"
I took a deep breath in to stop myself from tearing up again. "She's pregnant," I muttered, and my head fell into my hands again.
Katniss put a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "It's going to be okay, Finnick. She's strong."
"Not strong enough to take care of our child by herself."
There was a pause, then Katniss whispered, "Listen. I don't know what's going to happen while we're here. I don't know how many of us are going to make it home. But I promise you, I'll do everything I possibly can to get you back to her alive."
I raised my head up again. "You would do that for me?"
"Of course I would. For you and her."
"I--I don't know how to ever repay you," I said, trying not to cry again.
We hugged, and she said, "Just promise to help me with Peeta."
"Promise."
