Vince continued to make me eat and drink plenty. I could sit up on my own for a little bit, but I always ended up needing to lie down again. Even though the physical wound was healed, it left me very weak. And I don't think they had a Capitol medicine for that.

One morning when I woke up, Vince told me he was going out to hunt for something, because he needed some meat. I laughed and told him I'd see him later.

He left me with a full bottle of water and some bread, and told me it better all be gone by the time he was back. And we laughed together, and he left.

I lied in the tall grass all day except for when I ate or drank. Hours and hours passed, but Vince still didn't return. I hadn't heard a cannon so I knew he was still alive somewhere, but where?

I sat up for a while and didn't feel too dizzy, so I decided to try standing. I used a nearby tree to steady myself, and it turns out I could stand pretty well on my own. The sun was nearly setting, and I was afraid Vince would get lost in the dark, so I went out looking for him, always keeping a hand on a tree beside me.

I could see the direction he went in by the faint trail he left behind. I followed it closely, but it wasn't very hard for me to follow.

I peeked around a tree and saw him there, sword raised. I don't really know how he did it, but he had a rabbit carcass attached to his belt. I was just about to call out to him when someone burst through the trees in front of him.

It was a girl, one of the Careers from District 1, I think. She had a dangerous look on her face, one that said, "Look out, I'll kill you." She had an axe with a wooden handle in her hand. She grunted and the axe left her hands.

The axe sprialed through the air. At first I didn't know what she had been aiming at, but the second before it contacted Vince's neck, I knew her intent was to kill. I heard the cannon just as I saw Vince's head lying on the ground a few feet from his body, with a screaming expression still locked on his face.

I bit on my lip. Hard. Don't scream, Annie. I thought to myself. She'll do the same thing to you.

I waited and watched her as she went through the woods opposite of where I was. The second she was gone, I ran back the way I came. I fell face first into the tall grass and cried. Sobbed, even. Vince had been there, had been my protector. He was here when Finnick couldn't be. Finnick trusted him to take  care of me. I knew he would have to die for me to go home to Finnick, but I didn't think I would have to...watch.

I was sobbing so violently I barely felt it. I sat up and knew the ground underneath me was shaking, almost as bad as I was. And all of a sudden, a wave of water crashed through the trees and pulled me under.

I took in a deep breath at the last second, and after the waves had overcome me, I swam up until I felt the air again. It wasn't long before another wave came and pulled me back under. And I swam up again.

This lasted for about a day. I wasn't sure what happened, nor did I even care. I just kept swimming, only because I needed to be with Finnick, and I waited. I heard a few cannons, and before I knew it, a fanfare of trumpets. Someone announced that Annie Cresta was the victor of the 70th Hunger Games, and I was lifted from the flooded arena into a hovercraft. Someone gave me some sort of drink, but I screamed and knocked it over. Then a man in white came in and tried to touch me, and I screamed until some sort of sedative took me under.

The next thing I was aware of was being in a tunnel underground. I was told to stand on a metal plate, and I would be lifted onto a stage to watch the recap of the Games. But I didn't want to see them again, and I started hyperventalating. It only got worse when someone's arms wrapped around my waist. I screamed loudly.
