I woke up to a rustling below me. Great, I was dead already. It was dark, so I couldn’t tell if it was a person or something else. Then it called out to me.

“Annie? Is that you?” A familiar voice called out softly. “It’s Vince.”

“Vince? What are you doing here?”

“Are you in this tree?” He kicked the stump and I could feel it, so I told him I was. And I heard more rustling and then he was sitting on the branch next to me.

“What are you doing here?” I repeated.

“I promised Finnick I’d keep you safe. And that’s what I plan to do.” He pointed to the sword and knife he had on his belt, no doubt gifts from Finnick. And as soon as I thought about him, we got a parachute with a basket of food attached and two bottles of water. We ate together, and then I fell asleep. In the morning, we moved to another tree a mile or so away.

We periodically heard cannons, but I didn’t really keep track of them. Vince might’ve, but that was his problem. I was just supposed to hide this out.

One morning when we were moving spots, we heard rustling behind us. We should've known sooner or later someone else would find us, I guess, but it had only been a couple of days. Suddenly, out of no where, an arrow from a bow came through the trees and nearly missed Vince's arm.

"Annie, hide!" he screamed, and I tried my best to run away, but someone jumped on me. Someone heavy. All of the wind was knocked out of me, I couldn't breathe and I could only barely see. I think Vince was yelling something else at me, but I couldn't hear it.

Suddenly all I felt was...pain. A kind of searing pain you hope to never feel in your entire life, yet you always somehow do. Something you try and explain to everyone after you're well but you never quite know how to explain how dreadful it is. By that time, I just lied on the ground with my eyes closed and moaned. I pulled my arm to my chest and felt something warm and moist.

I heard the faint boom of a cannon. It can't be for me, I can still move my hand. They must know I'm not dead. I don't even want to think about the fact that it might be Vince when I'm lifted from the ground, not without a burst of pain that makes me black out until I'm lied on the ground once again.

"Oh God, I'm so sorry, Annie," I heard someone above me say, but they sounded far off. I couldn't place who they were or where I was or even that I was anywhere at all.

The last thing I thought of before I blacked out completely was Finnick and how worried he must be about me.

Finnick's POV

I pounded my fist against the first wall I could find, thankfully not making a hole in it. Damn it, I should have known he would hurt her sometime. Mags kept telling me to calm down and that she'd be okay, but if she didn't get some sort of treatment, she could never survive that. I burst through the door leading to the Capitol street.

I walked for a little while, not really sure where I intended to go. But I couldn't take it anymore. I leaned against a brick wall and slid down it, hiding my face in my hands.

Someone cleared their throat, and I looked up to see the woman with the long blonde hair that had come to District 4 for me. The one that Annie told off.

"What the hell do you want?" I asked. Great, here comes the tears.

"You want to save her, don't you?" She asked in a seductive voice. I was in no mood for this now.

"Yes, more than anything. But why do you care? You're the reason she's in there in the first place!"

She bent down beside me and touched my arm. I wanted to push her off, but I knew where this was going and that wouldn't help Annie any. "You know, I can help her. My sister works with medicine here. I can get her stuff that will help her nearly instantly. But, it comes with a price."

"What kind of price?"

She leaned close to me and whispered in my ear, "I think you know what kind."

I had no choice. I told Annie I would do anything to get her out of there, to get her home, including sleeping with the Capitol women. I could get her medicine and it would help her.

I stood up, and the woman took my hand and led me to her house.

Back to Annie's POV

When I opened my eyes again, it was dark out. At first, all I could see was the tall grass that surrounded me. Then I saw Vince knealing next to me.

"Oh thank God, it worked." He sighed with relief.

"What worked?" I asked. I tried to sit up but my head swam, so I just decided to enjoy the soft grass under my head.

"I...well, you don't remember anything, do you?" When I shook my head, he continued. "We were moving to another place. This--this guy appeared out of no where. Barely missed me with this bow and arrow he had. And then he, like, attacked you. I quickly pulled him off of you, but you were kinda dazed. I guess I couldn't blame you, he was pretty big. I kept shouting at you to run, but I guess you couldn't hear me. And I...I was aiming for the guy, I really was. But he ducked at the last second and...well, I kinda cut you with my sword. Really bad, actually." I sorta gasped, and it hurt a little. "Finnick got some really fancy Capitol shit that fixed it in a day or so. But it's been hard, nursing you back to health. I was really worried you were gonna die on me."

"That guy...the one that attacked me..."

"He's gone, don't worry. Some other girl came by yesterday. She's gone too."

I shuddered. Not only at the fact that I'd been lying here asleep and Vince had killd two people, but at the thought of what Finnick must have done to get me that medicine. A tear rolled down my cheek as Vince tried to make me eat some sort of soup.
