IronGuard

CHAPTER 4

Heavy, that's what they felt after the battle. They who survived the carnage of the battle and the demon that wreaked havoc on the walls for an entire hour without anyone being able to touch him. Hundreds of soldiers were killed by him in just one hour and not one of the IronGuard recruits stood a chance against the demon until one of the four pillars of the IronGuard Order arrived to fend the off. Talon Knight Therese arrived with fifty of the elite Guard of the Order and together with the Perion army they managed to hold the city walls but the number of dead was already too great.

Marcus and the recruits watched as the demon and a great IronGuard knight fought and after the battle they realized that Marcus could become like her a Talon Knight but it was too early to hope especially now that the demons were sighted amassing for another attack on the city.

They rest among the dead and hope that they will not be picked to carry the wounded and the dead bodies to the healing temples but it seems they've been noticed

"On your feet soldiers!" An officer shouted, "Carry the wounded to the healing temples!"

"We're IronGuard, captain. Ask the soldiers to do it" Liana replies but the captain gives her a disgusted look.

"Most of the soldiers in this section of the wall are dead" he replied, "Those that survived are either dying or have no legs to stand"

The captain walks away and looks at the dead bodies one by one like he is searching for someone. Dello realizes that he hasn't seen Captain Rein for awhile now so he asks the captain.

"Captain, where is Wall Captain Rein?"

"Captain Rein is dead, the minions tore him to pieces as he tried his best to hold them off alone" the captain stops just in front of one body of a young boy covered in blood and his armor broken.

"Are you looking for someone?" Marcus asks

"Yes, his son" The captain kneels down and pulls up the dead boy and cleans his face and sighs. "I had hopes that his son survived, a boy of fifteen and already dead fighting for his country but I think he fought for his father who was always at the wall"

"We'll take him to the temples" Marcus offers.

"No, It's my duty as his uncle to place him beside his father" The captain stands up and carries the boy down the bloodied steps of the wall. "You can carry the ones who have no relatives left to get them" The captain yells from below

The recruits, each of them stare at a dead soldier wondering if this poor soul had no one to get him, cry for him, mourn him and carry him to the funeral pyre. All of their thoughts are interrupted as Liana angrily stands up and says.

"Worthless soldiers" she leaves the group and the other noble born follow her.

Dello and the group are too tired to even get angry right now. Dusk is approaching and they have to start getting the bodies to be cleansed at the temples but as interesting as their day the never would've imagined what will happen next. Lady Therese arrives with Captain Gildas and a few Knights as her escorts and they have come for the recruits. She has no armor and wears only her council robes and a sword.

"Captain Gildas! We are glad that you are alive!" Finn happily cries out

"You as well Finn though I've been informed of the many from our company that fell during the battle" Gildas sadly replies, his eyes heavy with grief but as he looks at Marcus his eyes turn proud. "You did well as First Talon, Marcus"

"I failed to protect my comrades, captain"

"Failed?" Lady Therese joins the conversation with a calm voice, "I count twenty-nine, thirty if I include you Marcus and seven hundred thousand if I include the people of Perion. You successfully fought for yourself, for your friends and for the people of Perion, Marcus. Don't meddle in the thoughts of failure"

"Yes milady I understand" Marcus replies and bows but Lady Therese raises his head with her gentle hand

"Don't bow your head and don't call me milady. Like you I was of low birth" she says

Everyone is astounded to hear that one of the greatest IronGuard in Perion is a low born.

"In fact, me and your mentor here Captain Gildas were once how should you say um close because we were from the same village and had the same mentor for so many years" she happily says. "unfortunately I proved to be the better student" She gives this sweetest laugh they have ever seen.

The recruits want to laugh with her but knowing from first hand experience that Captain Gildas can give harsh punishments to those who laugh at him like the time when he could not hold his fart and they all laughed then he had them eat heavy food that day and he forced them all hold their farts all day long as training it was both amusing and disgusting.

Lady Therese notices that Finn is trying his best not to laugh and she remembers that Gildas can be very harsh at times so she says.

"There was this one time when Gildas slipped and rolled down a hill like a child and his face perfectly landing in mud"

Now the entire group bursts into laughter and even the Knights escorting them giggled secretly. Now Captain Gildas gives them this terrifying look as if he is already planning the worst training in his mind.

"Gildas if you try to punish these children for laughing, I will personally demand that the council to stop giving you students and send you back to home" she seriously says and Gildas falls stiff on his feet.

The laughing calms down and they all fell quiet for a moment until Marcus musters the courage to speak first.

"May I ask why are your here?"

"Lady Therese have come for you" Captain Gildas, "She has matters to tell you"

Dello and the others feel happy for Marcus but it seems they received the wrong idea.

"I have come for all of you. The students of Gildas has been chosen for a special quest"

After that their group were brought to the Hall of Talons where they were joined by the members of the council and three former students of Captain Gildas including Elos. Thirty recruits and three Knights personally invited into the Hall of Talons for a quest that will bring them to the edge of darkness itself.
