Chapter 5 part 1 - Don't Wanna Go Home
Kylie steps back and lets her gaze move up and down my body. Then she nods approvingly. Maggie mirrors her movements behind her.
"I have to say," Maggie puts a hand on Kylie's shoulder. "You really did it this time."
"I know," Kylie answers proudly. "Are you ready?" she asks seriously. I nod nervously. She turns me around and I look in the mirror.
I gasp.
I admit, I was really skeptical when Kylie wanted to take all responsibility for styling me for the party. I don't regret it at all, though. It might not be what I would have chosen myself, but that's exactly what's so great about it. I don't look like myself.
I'm dressed in a dark blue, kind of short dress, which really shows off my figure in all the right places. Normally, I would have said it's a little too tight, but hey, I want to impress tonight, don't I? Kylie has also waved my hair and put makeup on me. It has given my eyes a dark, mystic style that shows them off. She also forced me to wear high heels. I don't know how long I'll be able to wear them, but the outfit looks even better with them. All in all I couldn't be more pleased.
"Wow," is all I say to the anticipated looking Kylie.
She smiles victoriously, before straightening her own outfit. They've all dressed anonymously tonight. They said it's for me to stand out even more (I tried to protest). Their plan for me tonight is simply: make the boys drawl (while having fun doing so). Well, I'm going to focus more on the having fun part, since I doubt the first will happen. After I told them about Eric, they thought I had become this boy magnet (which I doubt). They wanted to see just how many boys I could get interested, before I picked one of them. I voted against it, but even Evelyn was on their side. Besides, we've had a long time to think it through since school were off the rest of the week.
"Ready?" Maggie asks and links her arm through mine.
"As ready as I can be," I answer.
And I'm as nervous as I can get when I step out of the car 10 minutes later. Last, of course. I keep repeating "I don't want to, I don't want to" inside my mind. I find myself falling into the same old, shy pattern I used before. Walking behind my friends. Looking at the ground instead of straight ahead. Holding my arms together in a way that'll hide my body. But then I realize what I'm doing and I ask myself: Why? If my friends and Hayley and Katie can act like wildcats for a night... Why can't I?
So I snap out of it. I walk up to my friends, placing my hands along my body and look up from the ground. The first thing I see is Jack's house, looking exactly like last Friday. Only with more people. Now I see college people as well. Wonder what Jack did to get them to come.
The second thing I see two boys standing outside the house... Checking me out! Actually, practically gaping! I glance at my friends to make sure I'm not just making it up in my head. They're both smirking secretly. So I wasn't imagining it then... I have no idea where the confidence comes from, but when we pass them on the way in, I smile brilliantly at them. I can hear them gulp. I laugh when we get inside. Maggie gives me a high five and Kylie squeals "Good job!". This party might get fun after all.
Suddenly Justin comes up to us. The first thing he says is "Hi Maggie,". Then "Holy... Is that you, Samantha?" His eyes widen as he takes me in.
"Hi, and yes it's her," Maggie answers for me, while she snakes her arm around his waist.
"You look... good," Justin says, looking for words that won't make Maggie mad. I see him glancing quickly at her, checking if it was okay.
I guess Maggie notices it too, because she assures him: "Don't worry. I know she looks smoking hot. That was the point."
