All day at school I practiced and played with my magic. And without anyone noticing if I may ad. I would be overwhelmed with joy to see a plant in a teachers room. I would make it grow and bloom. I've even made one un-grow, without even touching it. Now that I know what I am, I've been testing my hearing to see how far it can go by listening in on other people's conversations. So far my hearing goes over half way down our hall. Although my hearing is excellent, it seems as though my nose can't reach as far of distances. I can smell some things, but I'm not sure where they are coming from or what it is that I'm smelling.
Going to see Dragolya and Mistory will be good for me, to help me control and understand what I am. I am, though skeptical of all this. I still don't know if I can trust them fully. Hopefully there are no interruptions, and these lessons go well today.
I skipped off the bus and headed down the road towards the woods. I slowed my steps as I got half way down the road, then stopped. I had forgotten where I came in last. I looked left and right, but could not recognize anything from yesterday. I tried sniffing the air, but that was a bust. And I couldn't hear anything besides birds and the wind either.
I sighed and trended into the woods, not knowing where I was going. I only hoped I could find where we met last time. I stepped over shrubs and piles of dead sticks and fell a couple times. Where the heck are they?
I stopped to take a break at a tree and rested my head against its dark bark. At the angle that my head was at, I was looking near the center of two Douglas firs. As I stared at them, two figures began appear to my sight, like how your eyes would adjust to the dark. I stood up straight again and tilted my head. There was definitely something in those two trees. I took two steps to the side to give myself a better depth perception, they were round, whatever they were. I stepped closer. The lower limbs of the firs were blocking the objects from my view, so I walked up to the trees. As I looked up the trees I notice a large round sphere bulging out of each of them. The spheres were made of large branches and sticks, some areas had visible mud padding on the outside, and most of the nest-looking objects were covered in moss and ferns. The one to my left creaked as if something was inside of it and I snapped my head towards it, staring at it with my heart jumping in fear.
I saw something from the corner of my eye and I jumped back. Dragolya, or Mistory, (in the form of a dragon) grunted loudly. It was hard to tell so I glanced back at the tail, it was clean tipped. Mistory. I smiled slightly but let it slip away. I still wasn't fully use to the whole, dragon thing. She moved her head towards me slowly and placed it on my head.
"Mistory?" I asked with a laugh. I reached up and held her jaw lightly.
She brought her head down and moved her ears back and forth and chuckled humorously from the back of her throat. I smiled. Mistory looked up. Before I could turn and look I was being lifted up by my backpack into the left side nest, I squealed a little when my feet first left the ground but stayed silent the rest of the way up. I craned my neck back to see that Dragolya was holding me with her long single claw at the thumb of her wing and was brought through a dragon sized hole in the nest that was invisible from the outside. I was set down and it took a while for my eyes to adjust.
The inside of the nest bared smaller sticks for the bedding and straw that was mostly scrunched up in a corner. The sphere was leveled out for more comfortable sleeping and had a live fern growing here and there. I could see the firs trunk in the back, like something you would see in a tree house. I looked up at Dragolya who was looking down at me with her large, golden dragon eyes.
"Do you like it? I made it myself. Mistory did the same." Dragolya said through my mind.
"I love it." I said a loud. "What am I going learn today?"
She didn't say anything but grunted and bobbed her head. She climbed out of the nest and spun around to face me. She put her nose down. I wasn't sure what do, but it looked as if she was telling me to get on her head. I gave her a questioning look. She just nodded, saying it was okay. I think.
I held on to a branch at the entrance to the nest and tried to step down onto her nose. Once I had both feet on her nose I let go to hold on to the rest of her head but I lost my balance and fell forward on her forehead with her eyes just below. She lowered her her head down to the ground.
Mistory was human again. "Are you ready to start?"
After I touched ground, Dragolya became human as well. It's funny to think that I was just on her head.
"Can I ask questions first? I never got to yesterday." I asked fidgeting with my hands. They nodded. "Okay..." I searched my brain for the right questions. "How... how old are you guys?" I figured if an Elder can live for over a thousand years, how old could they be?
Dragolya raised her eyebrows. I only hope I didn't offend her. "Well, we are both 17." She said gesturing to Mistory and herself.
"Your around my age? 15?" I asked, enthused.
Mistory looked alarmed. "Uh... When our human form stopped growing." She corrected. She turned to me. "Eventually your human form will stop growing, hopefully during the middle age of your human life and not when your old and dry...beside the fact, you could have also been frozen in time when you were a baby but that obviously didn't happen..." She cleared her throat and waved her hand around. "Never mind don't listen to that last part."
"I am..." Dragolya started, then paused. "527." She whispered under her breath. "Mistory's 400-" she looked to Mistory. "-something..."
My eyes widened and my jaw dropped to the floor. "-four-five hun-" I stuttered.
"Oh good, you can count!" Dragolya joked.
I rolled my eyes. "What am I learning today?"
"Today, with no interruptions, you will learn to become yourself." Dragolya said as she straightened her shirt.
I tilted my head in confusion.
"We are going to teach you how to turn into form." Mistory added.
"Form?"
"It's what you call it when changing into something, like 'in the form of a dragon' or 'in the form of a human'. Which you are now." Mistory said moving her hands around in gestures.
I nodded my head as if understanding how to do a math question. Slowly.
My phone began to ring and buzz in my bag. I took off my bag and frantically shoved my hand in my bag. I glanced at the other two in front of me, they just stood there patiently. I looked down at my phone, it was a txt from an unknown number.
'Hey ths is 0nx. Sry we wrnt @ school. Sick. W@nt to hng out?' He text read.
Dragolya cleared her throat. I snapped my head up in alarm. She motioned me to hurry it along. I quickly typed back that I was busy, with correct grammar, if I may add. I shoved my phone back into my backpack and stood up again. "Are you ready now?" Dragolya impatiently asked.
"Yes." I nodded.
"Now, how you turn into form is..." She searched the skies for an answer. "... Just try to picture yourself becoming your dragon." She said slowly.
Dragolya snorted out a laugh.
Mistory snapped her head to her. "Well what's your big idea, smart guy!" She snapped.
Dragolya bared her teeth and growled at her.
Mistory growled back and turned back to me and gestured to try.
I didn't know where to start so I just avoided eye contact with them to think. I tried to think of the smoke that would trail around me and what I would look like if I was able to turn into a dragon. I looked down at my feet to see a deep gray smoke slowly trailing around my feet and ankles. I closed my eyes and tried to think of more possibilities so the smoke would travel faster around me.
I felt my hands hit the soft damp ground and I opened my eyes. My height didn't change, which kind of bothered me, and I was on all fours now. I looked down at my feet, which were now my hands and my feet were behind me. My hands were covered with golden scales and black long claws. They didn't look like my hands at all anymore, they looked a close up of a lizards arms on discovery channel. My neck was longer and I twisted it around to see my back side. My tail was long and had an arrow tip. I had wings that may have been as long as myself, if not longer. I moved them around with a new set of muscles. I moved my jaw around and my tongue to feel my new set of sharp teeth. I put my hand on my head and felt large bumps and two little round spikes on my head.
I leaped and jumped around and spun in circles. I ran around Dragolya and Mistory, as they turned into dragons themselves. Dragolya nudged me in the side with her nose, almost nocking me over. I faced them again and wagged my tail. "This is amazing!" I said through my mind. My tail stopped wagging. "But why am I so short?"
Mistory laughed. "Because you are only 15, and 15 years in dragon years is a human being being maybe... Two."
I raised where my eyebrows probably were. "Two? I don't act like I'm two."
"No, but you are still technically a cub." Dragolya said.
I groaned.
"Okay," Mistory tried to change the subject. "Amber, try to breath fire."
I blew through my mouth, but nothing happened. I tried again but nothing came out.
"From the stomach." Mistory said raising her chest to show her stomach.
I clenched my gut and exhaled hard from my stomach and finally little flames flew out of my mouth. I whistled with excitement.
"Unlike humans, we have a gas pouch that we can bring up and once it has reaches a spark tooth, that we also have and humans don't, it creates fire." Dragolya said opening her mouth to show me her spark tooth.
The tooth peculiarly looked very similar to the one that my mom picked up in the field. Those really were teeth. "But, does the gas pouch and spark tooth stay with you as a human?
"The gas pouch yes, but not the spark tooth." She said.
"Like this," Mistory burped and blew it in Dragolya's face.
Dragolya shook her head around and roared in disgust. She rammed her head into Mistory, making her stumble back. She got back up and hissed at her. Dragolya only mocked her and bobbed her head humorously.
Mistory looked like she had had enough of Dragoyla's foolishness. She held her head up straight and craned it above Dragolya's, her tail at a crooked in a dominate stance. She growled and flicked her tail, but Dragolya seemed unfazed. Dragolya only stepped forward and snapped at her. After a few more growls and dangerous eye contact they began to get physical. They clawed at each other and snapped at each others necks. Their growls got lower and they both backed off.
Dragolya looked to me then at Mistory. I assumed that they were speaking through their minds. They turned out of form at the same time and Mistory drew her bow at Dragolya.
Dragolya raised her hands up in innocence. "No Mistory, please!" She cried.
What is going on? Should I turn out of form? Wait, I don't know how too. Are they going to fight? Is Mistory going to kill Dragolya? What should I do, should I help? No, I might die too.
Mistory let loose her arrow and I closed my eyes. After I didn't hear anything I opened my eyes to see that Dragolya was holding the arrow at her chest where it was shot at.
She threw the arrow to the ground. "Ha, you missed!" Dragolya laughed.
Mistory smiled and let loose another arrow without warning. It was so fast I never got to blink. Dragolya caught it in mid-air again, aimed at her heart again. Dragolya smiled and dropped that arrow too. As quick as she caught the arrow she threw a knife at Mistory that came from a strap that was apparently on her belt.
Mistory brought out one of her arrows and blocked the knife which stuck right into the arrow. She yanked the knife from her arrow and threw it on the ground where it stuck almost to the handle. Dragolya threw another one at Mistory, but she dodged it and it stuck in a tree.
Mistory brought out an undamaged arrow and waved it around. "Now you have to go get them..." She said with a mocking smile.
Dragolya sprinted at Mistory and did a flip over her. Mistory flipped around and swung her arrow at her like a sword but missed her by an inch. Dragolya spun around, now with both her knives in her hands.
The knives were very shiny but the chipping scrapes on the edges and the sides looked home made. Engraved on sides were swirls and strange writing.
They began to have some sort of a "sword" fight. Mistory swung two arrows around like swords or maces and Dragolya zipped her daggers around, they clanged every now and then. With one final swipe of of her blade Dragolya cut Mistory's arrow in half and they fell still.
Mistory looked like a child in the toy box, and Dragolya just put sand in her Barbie's hair. "Aww..." Mistory wined. "Dang it Dragolya! Do you know how long it took me to make this one?" She bent down and picked up the other half of her arrow. Her face looked even more disappointed as she inspected the arrow head. "... Man, this one was my last stainless steel one too."
Dragolya shrugged. "Sorry, man. I'll make you a new one." There was a pause before Dragolya spoke again. "You probably shouldn't have used that one then."
Mistory gave her a cold glare. Then she couldn't help but crack a smile. "Whatever..." She said as she put the broken arrow back into her quiver.
I tried to speak but all that came out was a gurgle of a baby dragon roar. I shook my head and spoke through the mind instead. "Wait, you two weren't actually fighting? I thought you guys were seriously gonna kill each other!"
Dragolya laughed. "Ya, you should have seen your face. Pretty price less."
"We do that all the time." Mistory reassured. She laughed as well. "You can turn out of form if you want to?"
I didn't really want to go out of form, I wanted to stay like this forever. I felt free in this form, like a wild horse out on the green hills where no one can touch me. If I had a choice I would stay like this, forever, but I had to go back sometime soon. I turned out of form the way I turned into form last time. I almost felt unbalanced and used my arms as balance. I patted my clothes. Good, still had them on.
"Well, good job today." Mistory said. Placing her bow on her back.
"Yes, yes very good job." Dragolya mimicked in a British accent while placing her daggers in her belt.
