"Should we try writing another song?" I asked Shawn as I went through my songs in my song folder.
"We could." Shawn replied, taking a seat beside me on the bench again.
"It would be great to have at least two songs done this week." He said, his eyes watching my fingers go through the music.
"So Mendes, should we write another one about love or this time one about heartbreak?" I asked with a smirk. Shawn smiled but didn't end up replying for the sound of the front door shutting caught both of us off guard.
"Is that your parents?" I asked. Shawn's eyes squinted, making him look as if he were thinking rather hard.
"I don't think so," he said taking out his phone from his pocket and looking at it, "they said they would text or call when they were on their way home." He replied. He got up from the piano bench.
"I'll be right back." He said, disappearing into the hallway.

It was quiet for a while. I tried to listen carefully, curious about who had walked in the house. Then I could hear Shawn's name being called.
"Shawn, are you home?!". It was a feminine voice. I figured that maybe it was just a family member stopping by.
"Oh, there you are!" I heard, followed be laughter. Shawn's voice as well as the feminine voice became closer and clearer. I had already been looking at the doorway of the room when they had walked in. Shawn stood next to a girl with long blonde hair. His arm draped over her shoulder, symbolizing the comfort they shared between each other. I assumed that he had known this girl for a while, but I still couldn't figure out who she was to him. A friend? They looked as if they could be more than friends, there was something about the way they looked at each other.

"Oh, who's this?" She asked, referring to me, looking over at Shawn. She raised her eyebrows at him a few times and then laughed. Shawn shook his head and chuckled.
"Kendal, this is my new friend Aubrey. Aubrey this is my friend Kendal." Shawn said, introducing us.
"After all the years that we've known each other, I thought that we were best friends." She replied, obviously kidding around with him. Kendal looked over at me.
"You must be that girl who's helping him write his album." She said.
"Yeah, that would be me." I replied. Shawn took a seat next to me on the piano bench. He looked over at me and gave me a small smile, I smiled back. Kendal sat on the desk where the laptop was and looked over at us. The room fell silent, and I began to feel awkward.

"So not to sound rude or anything, but when are you wrapping this up?" She asked, moving her hand in a circular motion. Before I could reply Shawn did.
"Actually we weren't planning on wrapping up anytime soon. At least I wasn't." Shawn said looking at me. Kendal began to chuckle.
"You don't remember, do you?" She asked. Shawn stared at her with a puzzled expression.
"Shawn," She whined, "we were going to go see a movie!" She said. Shawn's eyes widened, likely remembering now of the plans that have been made.
"Shoot, I forgot." He mumbled.

Shawn slowly turned his head to look at me, before he could say anything I spoke up.
"Don't worry about it." I said getting up from the bench and collecting my music. Shawn sighed.
"Can we maybe pick this up again tomorrow?" He asked, a hint of guilt evident in his voice. I nodded my head.
"Sure.". I wasn't going to lie to myself, it did hurt when he chose to hang out with her and not me. Though, I hadn't known him that long so why would he choose to spend his time with me over spending the time with his 'best friend'?

"I'll drive you back home." Shawn said standing up from the bench.
"Kendal, do you want to come or wait for me here?" He asked, looking over at her.
"I'll just wait here." She said with a smile, swinging her legs that hung from the desk.
"Alright, I won't be long." He said, making his way out of the room. He waited at the door frame while Kendal and I shared an awkward goodbye.
"It was nice meeting you." She said before continuing.
"It probably won't be the last time I'll see you either." She chuckled. I just smiled before replying.
"I guess I'll see you around then.". With that said I followed Shawn out of the room.

"Actually Shawn," I said as we walked out of his house, "would you mind taking me to the instrument shop instead?".
"Not at all." He said with a large smile. We got into his jeep and headed for my destination. The car ride was silent but not an awkward silence. I decided to speak up, beginning to feel more comfortable with Shawn.
"So, Kendal. She's your friend?" I asked. Shawn nodded, looking straight ahead at the road. He looked at me for a split second before looking back at the road.
"What?" He chuckled as if I didn't believe him.
"Nothing, it's just that you guys seem really close." I responded.
"Yeah, we are." He smiled. Mine faltered a bit, but I didn't let him notice that. I had a feeling that there was something he felt towards her but I wasn't going to pressure him to admit it now.

After a while of silence Shawn spoke up.
"The song we wrote is great." Shawn said with a smile, looking over at me before looking back at the road. He stopped at a red light.
"Well you're a great writer." I replied. Shawn, now looking at me, rolled his eyes.
"It was all you really." He said.
"No, it was both of us." I replied. Shawn smiled and nodded his head.
"I knew that we would make a great team." He said, looking back at the road and pressing the gas when the light turned green.
"Yeah, we're pretty great." I replied, causing both Shawn and I to laugh.

Shawn didn't drive off until I made it into the shop. After walking in I looked back out the window to see Shawn's jeep driving away from the curb of the street. I turned around with a sigh. I looked around the shop to see that there were no customers, only Bobby at the back of the store stocking a shelf. Bobby looked up from what he was doing to look towards the entrance of the store where I stood.
"Hey Kiddo," he said with a smile, "you don't work today.". I made my way over to where he was, noticing that he was stacking clarinet cases on a bottom shelf.
"I know." I replied, crouching down on the ground and helping Bobby stack some cases.
"What have you been up too?" He asked as he began to open another box of clarinet cases.

"Well, I'm helping Shawn write his album." I replied, a small smile tugging at my lips when Bobby's eyes went wide.
"Shawn just dropped me off, we wrote our first song together." I said.
"That's huge!" He said with a smile.
"So, why the gloomy face?" He asked. I just shrugged.
"He's going to go see a movie with a girl, she's apparently his friend." I said, even though it was something that didn't need to be addressed. I don't know why I said it.
"What, do you not believe that they are just friends?" Bobby asked. He squinted his eyes as he looked at me, as if he were trying to find answers.
"Do you like him?" He asked. I looked away from Bobby and stacked another case on the shelf. I cleared my throat.
"No. We're just writing partners." I replied.
"Right." Bobby chuckled, causing me to roll my eyes and smile. I didn't reply, not really wanting to go deeper into the conversation.

"Well, if you're planning on staying I got some more boxes in the back." Bobby said, getting up from the floor. I stood up and brushed the dust from the floor off of my pants.
"Bring them on." I replied, following him to the front counter.
"Alright." He replied, disappearing into the backroom. I walked around the front of the store waiting for him to come back out. I stopped in front of the picture of Shawn and Bobby that was by the entrance of the store. I stared at Shawn and smiled, secretly wishing that we were still hanging out.
