They say that children will cheer you up no matter what so that is why I am sitting her watching them play in the play area at the front desk. The way they are so careless and free makes me sad knowing I will never experience that again. I sigh and wish to cry.
"Excuse me?" Someone asks loudly at the main reception.
"Yes? How can I help?" The lady asks.
"I'm here to look for someone... I heard she was in a terrible accident." They say.
"Name?" The lady asks.
"Oh right. Um her name will be either Catlyn Harvard or Catlyn Matthews." They say. Those two names are both mine. Harvard is my mother's maiden name and she always makes sure that I am called that to most of the public but Matthews is my real surname.
"Can I ask your relation to her due to the fact that she is in ICU and there are a lot of people waiting on her." The lady says. The man sighs,
"I'm her half brother." They say. I stand up and look at him.
"Her records show no half brother I'm sorry sir but we can not allow you up there." She tells him. He looks pained
"Please her father had an affair and that was how I was born, I need to see her, at least once before she dies. I want to meet her." He says. I study him closely. The lady shakes her head,
"I'm sorry sir unless you can get some more evidence we can't allow you to go up there." She gives him a sympathetic smile and goes back to typing on her computer. The guy slams his hand on the reception and walks over to me. He sits down and I swear I can see him looking right at me before he takes out his phone and calls someone.
"Miss Harvard you better get here right now or I will call the cops." He says into the phone angrily before hanging up and putting it back. He looks a lot like dad. The way his hair is perfectly highlighted and his tanned skin. His eyes however are a striking violet. He pulls out a picture from his pocket "I'm sorry I couldn't get here sooner." He mumbles. I catch a glimpse of the picture and see it is me from when dad came back briefly. His phone starts ringing again and I catch the name on the screen. Dad. Hesitantly he answers it.
"Come home right this instant!" I hear an angry voice on the other end.
"Did you know that your daughter has been in a major accident and has been in a coma? Or the fact that you have a younger daughter who's mother was beating up and screaming at her and she is so young?" He says into the phone. There is silence.
"I only have one daughter. And even then I want nothing to do with her." He says on the other end. I feel my heart drop at what he says.
"Then you are no longer my father." My half brother says.
"James please don't do this. You don't understand." 'Dad' begs.
"Then help me, because if I was you I would be heading down here right now to help pay for your daughters medical expenses and to fight for the rights of your other daughter." He hisses, but his conversation isn't going unnoticed.
"I can't. I never loved her mother and I wanted to leave her with something." He eventually replies. "I can't face her again and the only reason why I went back I'm the first place was because your mother had died and I thought maybe I could try and get you another one." He sighs.
"Don't talk to me again." James says and hangs up. He rubs his forehead seeming stressed. I am trying to get my head around everything when mum walks in with an angry face. James stands up,
"What is it you want?" She hisses.
"I need you to tell reception that I am Catlyn's brother." He tells her. She sighs but I notice some pain in her eyes.
"Fine." She grumbles. They walk up to the desk but I follow them intrigued. "Excuse me?" She asks the receptionist
"Yes how can I help?" She replies.
"This is James Matthews he was told he could not go and see his half sister because there was no proof that they are related I'm here to tell you they are. You have to let him up." She tells the receptionist. She nods her head and they both walk towards the door. "I'm not going up... I can't." Mum whispers and walks off. James walks up and I follow him. The waiting room outside of the ICU is packed. They all turn to look at him. Elliot gets up.
"Who are you?" He asks. James looks around.
"I...I um am Catlyn's half brother." He tells them nervously. Karl, May, Vito and Day all stand up.
"She doesn't have a half brother." Karl says. James gulps,
"She doesn't know... I've been trying to find her and when I did I was devastated to hear the news. Please let me see her." He basically begs tears coming to his eyes.
"Let him in." May eventually says. Hearing her say that makes me feel relaxed.
"Thank you." He says and walks in. I'm almost tempted to follow him but instead I stay still.
"You know if Cole wakes up he is going to get out of bed if he sees him." Day says. May nods her head,
"I know. But Cole is back on pain meds and was knocked out again." May sighs. Karl wraps an arm around her shoulder and kisses her forehead.
"May go home... Get some rest please. I'm worried about you. We all are. Just go home and have a nice relaxing bath. We will contact you if anything happens. I promise you. You've been stressing more than most." Karl begs her. May shakes her head.
"What if Cat wakes up? Or Cole does again and tries to get to her. I can't bear to see him in more pain. I need to stay here! Please" May cries. I look at the floor, this is my fault. Had I not made friends with May none of this would happen. Had I jumped from the railing none of this would happen. Four days and this is the amount of pain I have brought. I sink to the floor as nurses start rushing into ICU.
