The rain stopped pouring in the evening although traces of water droplets still clung to the windows.

The Darkling sat at his desk, reviewing the updated news coming from Ravka and surrounding cities, growing increasingly tired of his searches.

Sun Summoner returns with the tracker today at the seventh strike! More news to come in the morn! The Sun Summoner looks as radiant as ever!

His head pounded as he thought of the battles he fought with Alina. She had been so resentful of everything he gave her. She didn't want to be housed in a palace, all she wanted was her damned tracker. Yet once she got the damned tracker, they left to find the stag. The main component to his plan. The beginning of his destruction.

Ever since Alina retrieved the stag bones, she began a life of radiance through her power and desire to destroy him.

He was dark, he knew that very well. But what he also knew was that darkness came with power. The thing he lusted after.

He knew Adelina felt the same, if not more strongly than he did. Adelina was quickly deteriorating. He felt it when she tried to use her power. Her abilities came and went without her noticing.

She was highly unstable but the Darkling found it within himself to take her up on her offer. He could use her in ways he never found possible with Alina. Alina had too much light and goodness within her to do anything to help him. Adelina however, the only thing holding her back was her sister and Adelina didn't even know where she was.

He felt Adelina's pain whenever she saw one of her illusions come to life inside her mind. He felt drained, as if watching her suffer weakened him, as if she was taking his power from him.
He knew it wasn't possible, that was beyond Adelina's control, beyond anyone's control and ability.

Yet when seeing her crumple against him, his heart skipped multiple beats, not like it had when he was near Alina. No, his heart stopped when Adelina touched him. When Adelina slipped into unconsciousness, the Darkling called for assistance in getting her back to bed.

Sprinting to his room then his bath chambers, the Darkling removed his shirt facing himself in the mirror. His breaths hitched. His chest was turning grey, starting at his heart. He felt a burning sensation all around his torso, as though Alina's direct light was shining on him.

Adelina was beyond out of control. He knew she was a broken mess when he took her in, he even bloody agreed to join her goddamn defense against other malfettoes. His heavy breathing slowed to a minimum, the grey on his chest lightening only slightly before he put back on his shirt and left for the study.

Piles of books, scrolls and papers sat atop his desk, chairs around the room, and stacked among the shelves that covered the walls. He knew he needed to find out what Adelina truly was, and why she brought him pain. They were the same, they were both dark beyond belief, that midnight train wreck was worth a lot, and he would spend all night and nights after trying to figure out a way to know her motives before she did.
