Chapter Two
Keira and Jakob drove to school in silence, a part from the music blaring from the stereo and Keira didn't dare to ask Jakob to turn it down nor does she dare to turn it down herself, fear for what he would say. Jakob was already in a foul mood this morning due to what happened the night before and plus the fact that it's school today. Keira knew that Jakob hated school and didn't see the point in going if he wasn't planning on going to university, like she was, but in Keira's opinion school was a good escape from the... boring life at home.
Jakob pulled into the school parking lot and parked in the only free spot left. Yep, Keira decided. They were late. But when she looked at the school, all the students were out front, standing in groups and talking to each other. Maybe everyone just likes to get here early, she thought. Keira was confused as to why anyone would willingly want to come to school early, unless they were like her and loved learning new things. Keira and Jakob grabbed their bags from the back seat of the car and got out to face the crowd of students.
"Hey look, they must be the new students," yelled someone from the crowd and Keira then realized why they were all standing out front. They were waiting to see who the new students were. Keira could feel every pair of eyes turn in their direction, but while Keira shied away from their stares, Jakob seemed to drink it all up.
Keira and Jakob continued their path into school and all around them she could hear whispers about what everyone thought they would be like. She could hear girls gushing about how "cute" and "sexy" her brother is and she resisted the temptation to roll her eyes at their comments. Same at every school they went to. She didn't miss the comments made about her either. Girls whispering that they thought Keira was a bitch, that she was fat and ugly and boys making bets within their little friend groups about who would "bang" Keira first. You're all gonna lose, she thought to herself. No way would she let any of those greedy pigs put their hands on her, not to mention her father would be pissed if she did have sex with anyone that didn't have his approval.
Ignoring all of them, Keira walked away from her brother who was winking at a group of girls and went into the school building and headed straight towards where she knew her locker was. After the tour last week, Keira pretty much knew her whole way around the school, including where all her classes are and where her teacher's offices are so she could talk to them after class if she wished. When she found her locker, she put away all her school books, except for the ones she would need for English and Maths. Keira didn't want to have to walk back to her locker after every class to grab her books for each class, so she placed them in her school bag. She also had P.E. before lunch, but her uniform for that was already in her gym locker in the girl's changing rooms. Keira was happy that she didn't have to drag her P.E. uniform around in her school bag.
Keira had English first, so she headed down the corridor towards where she knew her class was, seeing as how she had three minutes left until class actually started. She found her class room and walked in, noticing that only five others students were there already. Her walked up to the back of the class room, hoping to stay hidden from view at the back and took a seat next to the window. She got out her new notebook that was clear of any markings, but she knew that by the end of the school year, it would be covered in different pictures and drawings that she is already planning on doing, and she also pulled out a pencil, a rubber and a blue, black and red pen.
While she waited for the class to start, she grabbed her pencil and started to draw random things on her book. First she drew a feather by drawing a straight line and little and big flicks on either side to look like strands on a feather. She added light and dark strokes to add texture to it. Keira decided that she liked it and went on to draw little symbols around it like the Deathly Hallows from Harry Potter, star signs, stars, Wiccan symbols and yin and yang. She was so engrossed in her drawing that she failed to notice that a boy had sat down next to her.
"Hey," he said and Keira jumped at the sound of his voice. "That looks really good." She looked over at him and saw that he was leaning over the space between their desks and looking at her drawings. He looked pretty cute, Keira thought, with his thick black hair that hung in front of his face, covering his green eyes, she saw. He was pretty well built too with his broad shoulders and Keira could see through his white school shirt and noticed that he had abs to go with it. He was defiantly cute, but she felt like she knew him from somewhere, he looked so familiar.
"Thanks," she mumbled and covered her work as best she could with her arms and hands, embarrassed that he had seen her drawings. Keira never liked anybody looking at them, because she thought they weren't that good, despite what some people tell her.
"I'm Daniel," he held out a hand for her to shake and after a hesitation, she reached out and shook it.
"I'm Keira," she whispered back, not really interested in talking to him. She released his hand and looked at the watch on her wrist, noticing that class was supposed to have started ten minutes ago. Where was the teacher? She wondered.
Daniel must've noticed the look on her face because he explained, "Mr Kenzie is always late to class. It's actually a wonder the school board hasn't fired him because of his tardiness, but he's lucky that he is a really good teacher." Daniel shrugged at his own comment. Keira didn't care whether the teacher was good or not, well, she did but she more cared about his lateness. She wished he would hurry up and show up so she could avoid talking to Daniel. He seemed nice and all and there was no warning bells sounding about him, but Keira avoids making new friends at school because she knew that she would have to move again and didn't want to have to lose any more friends once they knew the truth about her.
"That's good, I suppose," she mumbled to Daniel.
"Yeah it is." He looked back over at her and seemed to study her. "So, Keira, what's your story? Why'd you move to this little town?"
"My father's a highly regarded doctor and the hospital here wanted him to work here. I don't know why, but father agreed and here I am." She sighed heavily and laid her head of her desk.
"You don't sound too happy about that," he chuckled. Keira looked back over at him and really hoped that she wasn't going to move any time soon. She really liked this boy and wanted to be his friend. Normal people would've given up on her lack of a response ages ago.
"I'm not. We're always moving around because of how good he is and I never get to make any friends because if I do, I'll just have to say goodbye when I eventually leave again."
"That makes sense I guess, but too bad for you because I plan on being your friend." Daniel was smiling at Keira and she couldn't help but smile back. Something about this boy called to her and she doubt that she would be able to not be friends with him anyway.
"That's fine by me, but don't go crying when I have to leave," she winked at him, going back to her natural teasing tone that she saves for those she's really close to.
"Don't say that!" he laughed at her teasing him. "You're gonna be my new best friend! Of course I'll cry if you leave." She laughed at him as he pretended to cry by wailing like a child and covering his eyes.
"OK class," said a voice, drawing Keira's attention away from her new friend and towards the man who just walked into the classroom and who she assumed was Mr Kenzie. "I'm sorry I'm late, but I was stuck in traffic." Keira seriously doubted that he got stuck in traffic seeing as how it was a small town and when she was driving to school with her brother there was only two or three other cars on the road with them. By the state of his cloths and hair, all rumbled and messy, he looked like he just woke up from a busy night.
"Let's get started, shall we?" Mr Kenzie clapped his hands and so my first day of school officially started.
