Chapter Eleven
Keira and Daniel managed to skip the next couple of days of school without Daniel's parents finding out about it. Although, Keira thought that they were too distracted to notice anything around them. Ever since she stayed at their house on Wednesday night they would always stare at Keira, look at each other and ask her questions about her adoptive parents and her adoption. She found all the questions really weird, but was too happy to be free of her father, even for a little while, to care about their strange behaviour.
Now it was Saturday and Keira had to go home. She really didn't want to leave the safety that Daniel's parents and home provided for her. Here, her father couldn't touch her without providing proof of his abuse to her. Here, she could do what she wanted without getting hit in the face. Here, she could a normal teenaged girl. She didn't want to go home, but Keira had questions for her family, similar to the questions Daniel's parents asked her. Keira had the feeling that her parents lied about how she came to live with them.
"Are you ready to go?" asked Jakob, who walked into the room Keira had taken for herself while she stayed at Daniel's home. Keira had called Jakob a couple of hours ago, asking him to pick her up, knowing that the sight of her being dropped off at her house by a boy who wasn't her brother would set her father off and she'd end up getting beat up again.
"Yeah I am," she replied, picking the last of her school books and clothes back into her school bag. Keira didn't have any clothes herself, but Karen was nice enough to give her a few of her old T-shirts and jeans that surprisingly fit her comfortably enough to wear. "How was father the past couple of days?"
"You can stay here for a few more days," interrupted Daniel, who sat on the bed in the room Keira used. "If you want, that is."
"I would love to," Keira smiled honestly, "but the longer I'm gone, the angrier my father will get. That's really bad for me."
"Keira's right," stated Jakob. "Our dad is already pretty angry, but the longer she stays away, the angrier he will get." Keira smiled at her brother, appreciating his help on her leaving.
"I know that," snapped Daniel and then he sighed. "I just want to help you get away from him."
"I know that," smiled Keira. She walked over and hugged her best friend as tightly as she could to reassure him that she would be ok. "I'll see at school on Monday, ok?" Without another word, Keira followed her brother through the house and outside into his car. It was silent on the car ride home, but Keira assumed it was because they were both nervous to see their father's reaction to her stay at a friend's house without his permission.
When they got home, Keira wasn't surprised to see her father waiting just inside the house for them. She dropped her bag on the ground just inside the door and waited to see what he would do to her for her punishment this time.
"Did you have fun?" was all he asked her. Keira looked up in shock and couldn't stop her mouth from dropping open, stumped with where he was going with the conversation.
"Yes, father," she replied. "I had a great time with my friend and his parents."
"That's good," he nodded. "Even though you must be punished for not telling me where you were stay, I think you deserved to have a little break from me."
Keira was now more shocked then she had ever been in her entire life. She looked up the stairs where Jakob had crept up to see him standing at the top, listening in on the conversation and he was just as shocked as she was. She looked back at her father and couldn't help but ask, "Father? Who were my real parents?"
