Chapter 1

Three. Two. One.

Beep, beep, bee-

I hit my alarm clock. Turning my head to see that, yes, it was 5 AM, exactly a minute from when I last checked it. My school year has officially begun. I slowly get up, stretching as I make my way towards the bathroom. I stare at myself in the mirror, looking intently on the details that make me, my dark chocolate hair matching my eyes. I stand there for a few seconds before turning to get ready.

Dressed in my new outfit that I put together weeks ago, I take one final look in the mirror before grabbing my bag and heading for my brother's room. Two soft knocks, then I hesitantly open the door.  Peering into the dark room, I have to wait a moment for my eyes to adjust; I glance at two beds, one neatly made, one piled with mess, but no brother, so I turn around and shut the door.

I take my time walking down the stairs and into the kitchen, where my brother is standing over the island drinking a protein shake.

"Jesse," I say. He jumps, startled, glancing around the room until his sleepy eyes fall on me. "You ok?"

"Yeah," he says plainly, pushing off the island top and tossing the bottle into the empty sink. He glances down into it, offering only the reply, “No breakfast?"

He’s still glaring into the sink as if something is going to grow from the drain. I can hear the worry in his voice.

I simply shrug stating, “You know I never eat breakfast."

“Yeah, and it’s not healthy," he says looking up. He’s always being a big brother.

“You’re not healthy." I joke, seeing he's expression is the same I quickly add enthusiastically, “Alright, let’s go!"

Driving down the road, I'm constantly checking my brother. He’s a senior this year and just got his license over the summer. Ever since I got to high school we've gotten closer. Still, I can't shake the feeling that I'm his shadow. Even though out of my siblings he is the closest to me in age, in personality we're opposites. Being the popular football star that he was, he was always at parties, practicing his sports and making our dad proud. Unlike me who was the moody one of the house and the nice, shy sister of Jesse Stockton anywhere else.

Bass up high, we pass through the city, I rest my head back and close my eyes letting the beat sink in. I just kept repeating the same two syllables in my head again and again letting them flow with the beat..., ' New year, new year, new year.'

I lean against the car door scanning the parking lot as I wait for Jesse to gather his things. The lots filled with mostly trucks and sports cars. His used Jeep stands out from the other, nicer cars, but he loves it just the same. We walk together towards the building until a group of guys call him over. Without even a glance in my direction he's gone, hollering to one of the boys as he leaves.

"Bye." I say not expecting or receiving a reply.

I keep walking trying to pay as little attention to my surroundings as possible. I walk pass a senior couple locked together. I walk pass a group of girls loudly gossiping about some of the football players, (no doubt involving Jesse). I walk until I reach the entrance to the building and then stop. I look up at the bold blue and black letters posted on the building, New Falls High School. I take a deep breathe, exhaling the last bit of summer I had in me, grabbing the door handle, ready to start the year.
