“You have got to be kidding me. I mean I guess I should be happy that you have seen Titanic and the Notebook, but Up has one of the greatest love stories…and it’s animated,” I said.
“I’m sure someday I will see it. There is no need to worry,” he said with a laugh.
“Well you better because your life won’t be complete until you have seen it.”
With the end of that question, I realized that I had been officially stuck in an elevator for 45 minutes and the clock was still going. We pushed the emergency button about 10 minutes after we got stuck to put off the sound of the bell that would go off when we pushed it. Now, however, we were so interested in the conversation and seeing who could ask the most random question that we had tuned it out. Dylan pulled up the sleeve of his button up to look at his watch.
“I’m not an expert elevator repair man, but you would think they would have gotten us out of here by now,” he said after seeing the time.
“Our like we got stuck in some weird way and it’s hard to reach us or something,” I said. “But I would think we would be getting out of here soon, so how about we start practicing for that interview of yours.”
“Ok, but how do you know what kind of questions they are going to ask me?”
I put my hand on his shoulder. “Buddy, it’s a women’s magazine, which means they want to know all about your love life.”
Dylan gave a half-hearted laugh. “My love life…yes…because that is worth a whole interview,” he said.
“So I take it that means you aren’t seeing anyone at the moment?”
“That would be correct, ma’am,” he said as he looked at the floor.
“When you are scoping out potential women, what do you look for?”
He paused a moment as if to collect his thoughts.
“I just want a girl who laughs at all my stupid stuff and makes me laugh just as much. Someone that supports what I does, but goes after her own dreams too. Someone who will stay in bed all day and do nothing we me…” he said as his voice trailed off.
I just sat there a moment. I could sense from the tone of his voice that there had been some heartbreak there – maybe some women that had had those qualities, but didn’t follow through. I was just shocked that he let me into that little part of his pretty private life. He had only known me for about an hour, but yet he trusted me with this information, and because of that I suddenly trusted him more.
As I tried to think of how to respond to his answer, the elevator suddenly dropped a couple feet, scaring us both.
“Thanks for the warning repair men,” he yelled towards at the floor as if they could hear him. He turned to me. “Are you ok?”
“I may have peed myself a little, but otherwise I think I’m good,” I said.
He laughed. “Yeah, ‘depends’ on how you look at it.”
I glared at him. “That was a horrible pun.”
While he continued to laugh, the elevator suddenly dropped a couple more feet. We could now hear the voices of the repairmen, who told us to step back from the door if we were near it as they would now be prying it open.
“Finally,” Dylan said. “I was starting to think we were going to die here together.”
“Well at least we wouldn’t have died alone,” I added with a laugh.
The doors started to slowly open until we were able to fit through them again.
“Ok, you two can get out now. So sorry about that. Hope this didn’t cause any troubles with your day,” said the repairman.
“Oh it was no hassle. I actually kind of enjoyed it,” Dylan said looking at me with a big smile, which got some butterflies going in my stomach.
Since we were back to the first floor because of how they had to go about repairing the elevator, we hopped onto another elevator to take us to Glamour’s office. When we finally got the offices and explained what had happened to us, we were led our separate ways.
Considering how late we were for our meetings, they whisked us both away without getting the chance to say goodbye to each other, which had me feeling down. I had always watched Teen Wolf when I got the chance, and Dylan…well Dylan’s character had always seemed like the greatest guy, but now to meet him in person and just talk. I wasn’t going to lie, I was crushing on him pretty hard. I knew that I shouldn’t even waste my time though because he had met how many girls and most likely had a girl he was interested in back in L.A.
I put it all away as I entered the interview. This was do or die for staying in the Big Apple and I had to make a good impression. The woman who was conducting the interview (she informed me she was something with a big title) offered me coffee, which helped to settle me down.
The interview started with the basic questions of where I was from, my schooling, and my training in general, and gradually turned into more of the “deeper” questions like why I chose journalism, what I hope to accomplish in this profession, and so on. I had tried to rehearse in front of my mirror before I came, but now as I was in the interview, all the answers I had somewhat prepared left me. I hoped whatever words were coming out of my mouth sounded as good as they did in my head.
The interview last for a little over half and hour. The interviewer said Glamour would be contacting me in no less than a week with their answer. I was hoping she would have been able to tell me right away, but I realized that the hiring process in a big company wasn’t that simple. That meant another week of waiting and doing nothing for me though.
As I came out of the room and walked back to the lobby, I suddenly heard my being yelled from behind me.
“Haley! Haley, wait up!”
I turned around expecting to see the woman that had just interview me with something she forgot to give me, but instead I turned to see a male body in familiar skinny jeans, button down, and Converse. It was Dylan.
“Haley,” he said as he finally reached me. “I was hoping I would catch you. Considering we had such a drama filled day, would you like to go get some coffee with me?”
A huge smile formed on my face. “Well you know, my schedule is pretty busy with my demanding job, but I guess I could do that,” I said with a laugh.
He laughed. “Well let’s go then missy. But how about this time we take the stairs just to be safe?”
