- Maya's POV -
I told everyone to go home so that I would look at the dresses myself. Which would also give me some time to think about Lucas.
I heard the door open. I knew who it was.
" Riley I told you that I need some ti-," I stopped when I saw who it was, " I don't want to hear another negative comment, Lucas," I said, turning back to the dresses.
" I'm not here for that, I'm here to apologize," he said, walking towards me.
" Well, I would very much appreciate that, Lucas," I said, taking a seat.
" I can't believe I'm saying this, but I really miss Huckleberry, Ranger Rick," he said, taking a seat right next to me, " And your ' ha-hurr'," he looked at me.
" That was high school, Lucas, things change," I said.
" No," he said," Josh changed you," he looked at me.
" What are you talking about, Huckleberry?" she asked me.
" There you are. You didn't change, Maya. Josh made you change. You were so in love with him, that you changed yourself just to impress him," he stood up," And you even ditched your best friends just to hang out with him," he looked at me.
I just looked at him, unable to say anything. Because it wasn't Josh's fault.
" You see, Maya? You can't even deny it because it's true," he took a seat opposite of me.
" You know what, Hopalong? I expected an apology from you, not you talking about my fiancee," I said holding up my hand, showing him the ring, " So unless you're apologizing, you can take your imaginary cowboy hat and walk away," I stood up, walking towards the dresses.
" You remembered?" he asked.
" Remember what?" I turned to face him.
" The imaginary cowboy hat," he said, standing up.
" Of course I did," I said, walking towards him, " I remember everything about us," I said.
" Us?" he asked.
" You know, our bickering, our teasing, our flirting, our-" I was interrupted by him.
" Flirting?" he asked.
" Huckleberry, you still haven't changed your oblivious mind, haven't you?" I teased.
" What are you talking about?" he asked, confused.
I rolled my eyes and sighed, " In middle school, I liked you. This progressed up till high school.Ever since I saw you on that subway, my heart melted. But then Riley liked you too, so I stepped back for her, for you guys. After our constant teasing and flirting, I fell in love with you more. But you still liked Riley," I sat down, looking down," So, I got with Joshua, hoping that you'd notice me, but you didn't. But in the end, I fell in love with him. And I don't regret it," I said, looking down at my ring.
I felt him walking towards me and sat down with beside me.
" I liked you too," he said.
" What?" I looked at him.
" The same reason why I dated Riley. I thought that you'd realize that you're losing out on this," he pointed at himself.
I chuckled. I missed this. I missed us.
" You know, you were the one that changed me," I pointed.
" Wait, what? What did I do?" he asked, worried.
" Relax, Huckleberry. You didn't do anything. It was me," I sighed, " I thought that my habit of teasing you made you get annoyed with me, so I threw that habit away," I looked at him.
" Maya, I liked you for all of your imperfections. In fact, I loved you for your flaws that made you human," he stood up.
I looked up at him, scrunching my eyebrows. Why was he saying these things to me when he was throwing negative comments earlier.
" Why are you saying these things?" I asked him.
" Because I still like you," he took a seat in front of me, " And seeing you take a big step with Josh makes me regret that I haven't made a move on you at all since the day I first met you," he looked at me, " I don't want to lose you again," he looked into my eyes.
" Lucas," was all I could say.
" This was stupid, I'm sorry," he said while getting up to exit the store.
" Lucas, wait!" I called out to him.
He turned around. I walked towards him.
" I like you too. But Josh has put in so much effort to propose to me and I can't jut let him down like that," I looked at him, held his hands, " But on the plus side, we'll still be in each other's lives. We'll always be friends, best friends," I smiled at him.
He pulled me into a hug. I embraced it. His warm body, his addictive smell, him. I started crying.
" Maya, are you crying?" he asked me as he let go.
" Apparently," I chuckled while wiping my tears, " I just can't believe the guy who I've loved the most is standing right in front of me, but I'm not able to marry him," I sobbed.
" Maybe you should reconsider?" he asked as he held my hands.
" I don't really know right now," I looked at him, "Can I have another hug?" I asked him.
He opened his arms, inviting me to be comforted. I continued my sobbing, no heavy crying.
" I'll let you reconsider," he said as we let go.
Once he got out of the store, I looked at the ring. Is it worth the reconsideration?
