MAYA
" The dance is this Friday and no one has asked me yet," Riley whined.
I rolled my eyes as I slammed the locker door, receiving a scream from Matthews.
" What was that?" she asked, pointing her finger to the classroom.
I chuckled at the question she has asked me every single time it happens, as she receive the same answer each time.
" He'll come out soon," I smiled.
I swung my backpack over my shoulder as we walked to class, hearing Riley whine about how no one has asked her to the dance for the past five months. I stopped in my tracks as I spun on my heels, facing her.
" Every guy has asked you, but you said no," I held both of shoulders, " Why? Because you wanted to go with the right guy," I mocked her sentence she says after rejecting every guy that has asked her to the dance.
" I want to have my dance with someone special and not with someone I do not know very well," she defended herself as she straightened herself up.
I rolled my eyes at how dramatic she was as I turned around, bumping into something hard. Considering he was way taller than me, I had to look up to see who it was.
" Wow, ShortStack," he gasped at my clumsiness.
I rolled my eyes once again as I walked behind Riley, allowing her to step forward and have a few words with her prince.
" Hi," he smiled at her.
" Hi," she smiled back with the preppy voice of hers that always seemed to put a smile on faces.
I leaned my side against the bench as I spectated the school's favorite couple have their usual conversation that consisted of constant greetings. However, a turn was taken during their conversation. Lucas looked over Riley's shoulder and smiled at me.
" Hey," he greeted.
I didn't know what to do. This was unexpected. I was always the one at the back, not being noticed by others as the two received love for being so sweet.
Being the cool person I am, I nodded as I returned him a smile, " Hey,"
The moment was interrupted by Darby Walker, the school's biggest gossiper, walked up to us with yearbooks in her hands.
" Hello Lucas, Maya and Riley," she greeted us as she gave out yearbooks to each of us, " Here are the yearbooks, and Lucas, Maya," she called out to us.
Both Lucas and I looked up at her in sync as we waited for Darby's next sentence.
" Congratulations on winning favorite couple," she winked at us as she walked away, giving out yearbooks to different people.
I froze. Not knowing what to do. If I reacted a certain way, it would break Riley's heart. No words were heard from Lucas and Riley either after hearing Darby's sentence.
I spun in my heels as I faced them. Seeing Lucas' eyebrows being furrowed and Riley's mouth gaping made us all not do anything. We were all shocked.
Just then, the bell rang, indicating that it was time for the next class. I slowly walked to History while my eyes remained wide open. As I took a seat, I looked up at the board, noticing that Matthews had his forehead covered in chalk dust.
" Hey Matthews you got something on your face," I pointed out, referring to his forehead.
He slammed his hands on my table, " Yeah, Maya, I know. And you did this," he glared at me.
