Three days earlier...

Cady Somber marched into the coffee house with only one thing on her mind.

Kendal Winters.

Meet me at the coffee house after school, Kendal had texted during eighth period. Cady assumed it was something about Shane again.

Shane was Kendal's boyfriend. With dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, and cute freckles sprinkled across his cheeks, Cady could understand why she liked him so much.

But that didn't prevent the twinge of jealousy she felt whenever she saw them together.

Kendal sat by a window at the back of the coffee house. Her legs were crossed daintily, and the sunlight streamed onto her lightly tanned cheekbones. Her hazel eyes lit up when she saw Cady, and she gestured for her to sit down in the seat opposite her.

Cady slid into her seat without hesitation, and immediately Kendal launched into explanation. "So apparently Shane is losing interest in me. I mean, I've been wondering why he hasn't even kissed me yet but I never thought it would come to this."

Cady's heart sunk. She hated talking about Shane, and, unfortunately for her, he was one of Kendal's favorite topics of conversation.

"Maybe he just doesn't want things to move too quickly." Cady suggested, playing along.

Kendal rolled her eyes, "As if. Besides, he kissed Jocelyn within the first two weeks of dating her."

Kendal went on to complain about Shane's year-long relationship with Jocelyn, but Cady was barely listening. Her green eyes grazed Kendal's face, the way her eyelashes fluttered, the way her pink lips moved. She was almost angelic.

Wow.

"Cady, are you listening to a word I'm saying?" Kendal said, glaring.

Playing with her napkin, Cady sputtered, "Uh, yeah. I'm just a little preoccupied."

Kendal laughed, "With what? You've got nothing going on in your life. Which reminds me, I'm having a boy-girl sleepover this weekend. Can you make it?"

Sighing, Cady replied, "You know how my mom is, Kendal. I wouldn't be allowed to go."

"Oh please, learn to live a little." Kendal snorted, before turning to the waitress to order two strawberry banana smoothies.

As the pair waited for their drinks, Kendal picked up the topic of Shane once more, and Cady found herself nodding along mindlessly. Just two minutes later, the waitress returned with two smoothies and a large toothy grin, "Enjoy." She singsonged.

Kendal unwrapped her straw and stuck it in her cup. "You, Cady Somber, need to learn to let go. No boy-girl sleepover ever hurt anybody. Just tell your mom it's just me and you." At this, she winked.

"Fine." Cady muttered, flicking at her glass. "But it's your fault if this all goes haywire."

Kendal threw her hands up in the air, as if she were surrendering, "Hey, I can live with that. In fact, you're gonna see just how much more your life can be when you're living on the wild side. In just twenty days, I'll give you twenty reasons to let go."

Cady arched one eyebrow, "Oh yeah?"

"Sure." Kendal said smoothly, "In fact, I'll start right now. Reason number one: strawberry banana smoothies." And with that, she sat back and began to drink, a grin plastered across her face and a mischievous look in her eye.
