Lone Mercury

The ceaseless gunshots play through my head like the music of an old-fashioned jewelry box. I lay motionless, the soft sand gently blowing over my body in ripples like the ocean. My squad has long moved on, believing me to be dead, as I soon would be. I gaze up at the blistering sun as my eyes glaze over, and I think of my precious family. I'll never return, and my body will lay here for eternity. A dulling numbness creeps up my limbs, and too soon, a force is pulling me farther and farther into the unknown. The demanding orange orb appears smaller and smaller while I slip away. A thick and foggy darkness seeps into its place, overtaking my vision. I faintly hear my name murmured, then I simply succumb.
