I sit for a while, I don't know how long; maybe an hour, or even a minute. But at some point, I do stand up, kiss him on the forehead, and walk to the door, ready to depart without a piece of my heart. It will always be left here, in this very room, where I lost my closest friend. The steps I take shorten and become slower in pace. This is going to be hard, I admit to myself. Then I do the unthinkable. I look back.
