Chapter Two

It's early morning when my mum comes into the room I share with my little brother, Connor. She opens the curtains, and the bright light blinds me for a second. When my vision returns I start to complain, but then I see the look on her face.

"I need to tell you something." She says, "It's about Darcy." She sounds slightly nervous, but I ignore it.

"Don't talk to me about her." I say. I'm still angry about what happened yesterday.

"I know you two fell out, Emily, but this is serious." She tells me. I can see that she's not going to give in.

"What?" I say grudgingly, although I really don't want to hear it.

"Darcy's been in an accident." She says, checking to make sure that Connor's still asleep before she continues, "After your argument yesterday she ran off to the river, and she fell in. She was taken to hospital, and she was there overnight."

Overnight. How could so much change so quickly?

"Will she be okay?" I ask, but again I don't want to hear the answer.

"I don't know." She replies. "The doctor said that she's in a coma."

I look into my mother's eyes and I know she's thinking the same thing I am. My cousin fell into a coma after she was in a car crash last year.

And she never woke up.
