There's no point in trying to work out what the teacher's saying now. I zoned out a long time ago, and I don't know enough of whatever language this is to even begin to piece together what she's trying to explain.

All I can think about is Darcy, who still hasn't improved since the day of the accident. We're trying to be optimistic, but it's been weeks now and we're getting less hopeful every day.

She's just so utterly unreachable. No matter what you say to her she doesn't respond, and the doctors aren't sure she can even hear us. What if she never wakes up, and I never got the chance to apologise?

My train of thoughts is interrupted when the school secretary comes into the room.

"Is Emily Newland here?" She asks, and when she sees me she beckons for me to come with her.

"Your mum's on the phone." She tells me as I follow her out of the room, and I immediately think of all the terrible things she could be calling about.

When the secretary hands me the receiver I'm reluctant to take it, but I do, and almost fall to my knees in relief when I hear the words,

"It's Darcy. They think she's waking up!"
