“No, no, no, no, no oh my god, what even is happening to my life. What the hell is this?” I scream as I rush through my front door holding up the piece of paper that hasn’t left my hand since last period today.
“What, what is it?” Mum yells coming out of the kitchen holding the big chopping knife menacingly in her hand.
“I got a D in my Maths test...” I tell her pretending to be completely dumbfounded.
I hold out the piece of paper, which had been burning a hole in my hand since I first got it, so mum can take it out of my hand.
“What are you talking about Harley this says A?” she points out the huge A marked on the front of the paper.
“Oh sorry, I guess I just realised that I would’ve gotten a D if I hadn’t had Adam to help me” I sneer in her face, I snatch the paper back and turn my back on her.
“Harley come on” she shouts after me as I run towards the stairs “It was for your own good”
That’s it “For my own good?” I shout turning on her “so it was for my own good that you told me that you think that Adam is trying to hurt me, that he isn’t safe around all because of some silly rumour that you heard. Excuse me if I can’t seem to wrap my head around it and I'm sorry, but I know that you’re not telling the truth” I spit at her and she flinches back “I heard you talking to that man, who is practically living with us now, telling him that I couldn’t handle the truth”
“Harley, please…” she begs, but I don't want to hear it.
“No I'm sick of this mum, your being a total cow. I'm leaving” I say with such fierceness, I even scare myself with the way I should.
“Harley wait!” she calls out to me but I'm already closing the door behind myself.
I slam the door and with my boots stomping angrily down the pathway, making my way down toward my motorbike, which hasn’t been ridden for a good while now.
“Where do you think you’re going missy?” A loud booming voice comes from behind me, I turn to look at the large man wearing a black leather jacket and big steel toes boots, and I can just see the butt of his gun poking out on his right hip.
“I'm going for a ride on my bike you little shit, got a problem with that?” I sneer raising my eyebrows and fold my arms
“Go ahead” he practically pushes me toward the bike
“Good” I mutter and sling my leg over the side of the bike, turning it on and revving it up, I kick up the stand and back myself down the driveway. I see the front door slam and mum come out the door, she stares at me, her eyes pleading. But I release the brake and ride onto the road, away from my mother and towards the place that I promised not to go to ever again.
Adams Mums house.
*****
I ride for what seems like hours, the sun slowly sets over the horizon and all I can hear is the hum of my bike.
I pass the little service station that Adam and I passed what seems like a year ago, but was actually only three days. I keep driving and pretty soon the sun has completely set and I am left riding on the dark highway with only my headlights for guidance.
I ride and ride until I get to the part of the road where I'm pretty sure the turn off for the house is, I slow down so I'm only crawling along the black strip, I turn to my right and scan the darkness, I stare into the trees and find an opening, so I turn my bike in the direction and enter the darkened path.
I only get up to forty as I ride down the road, taking care to dodge all of the holes in the road that I didn’t notice while we were in the car.
I ride the path until I come to a stop in front of the giant house that I only spent two days at.
