As I walked through the solitaire streets the wind roared and the trees rustled. I quickened my pace and leaned my back against a cold, brick wall. Usually when it was this quiet, there were others waiting and watching your moves from a distance, ready to prance at you any second. I searched my bag and pulled out my black pocket knife. I held it tight in my right hand as I continued my way into a building, which seemed like old grocery store. I was sure it was almost cleaned out by now, but I needed to check everywhere just in case. I turned the knob on the door, making sure it was locked.
I swiftly made my way in and took a deep breath. I prayed no one saw me, but I'm sure someone did. As quickly as I could I filled another bag I had brought with me, with canned food and some clothes I had found at the back of the counter.
I slung the other bag over my left shoulder as I continued my search for pills. I opened and closed cabinets behind the counter, until I realized the door to the store was being opened. I peeked slightly above the counter and there stood a broad silhouette picking at the lock on the door. I crouched down and made my way to the back door of the store. I crawled in the small storage room and breathed heavily. Pocket knife in my right hand and left hand clutching at my locket necklace, my parents had given me. I will do whatever it takes to make it out alive and make sure my parents are okay and have what they need. No matter the costs. I mentally prepared myself to fight this man back.
I sat there in the darkness as footsteps could be heard. The wooden floor creaked as his footsteps got closer. I have done this multiple of times but it always terrifies me knowing I might have to kill someone. The sound of a fallen bucket was then heard, making me scoot further against the wall.
"Fuck." A man cursed out loud.
He then reached the room in which I was in. I shut my eyes close as if that were to make me invisible in this blackness. I then propped my eyes open carefully watching his body language. I could not see his physical features but I could tell he was searching the room. His head turned left to right as he scanned the obscurity. His moves were frantic and berserk.
"What the hell are you doing?!" Another voice came closer to the room. I assumed he was acquaintances with this man. The man standing in the room sighed and left quickly, leaving the storage door open.
"I swear I saw someone come into the store..." I heard him explain to the other person who now was in there as well.
"Well you saw wrong. Now let's get going before it is too late. John said she only had a few hours left..."
The sound of pill bottles was heard being pushed and knocked down. It quickly caught my attention.
"Medicine." I inaudibly, whispered with some sort of joy.
I quietly slid my bottom on the floor and turned my head left. I tried seeing where they were. They were searching some shelves across from where I was. I prayed that they would not take what I needed. From what it sounded, they needed some strong meds as well.
My breathing quickened twice as fast now. Should I wait until they leave? Or should I fight them for it?
My body took control of me. I swiftly got up and without a single care I made my way towards the two men. I raised my hand with my knife ready to stab them both.
Right when I was about to stab the first man I had come across with, he turned around knocked the knife out of my hand and held me from behind with my arms at my back.
"What the fuck do you want?" He asked roughly against my ear. The other man stood there chuckling to himself. He was a few inches shorter compared to the man who held his grip on me.
"I need some pills." I spoke confidently.
"You a drugie?" The other man questioned while still chuckling.
"No. My father's sick." I remained assertive. The man holding me loosened his grip.
"How do we know you're not lying?" The shorter man dumbly interrogated. The man who held me let me go.
"Take some." He flatly spoke.
The shorter man seemed as confused as I did.
The clouds had cleared up a bit causing the moonlight to shine in through the window. The moonlight reflected on the tall man's face. His jaw line was broad and prominent. I could see his chest rise slowly and his eyelashes bat gently.
Without any questions or hesitation, I grabbed some of the bottles with medicine and stuffed them inside the bag. I could feel a pair of eyes staring me down while the shorter man shook his head in disbelief.
"If she fucking dies because you're letting this chick take some medicine, it's your entire fault. You're fucking fault and I will never forgive you Zayden." The other man spoke to the tall man.
It hurt me knowing that taking this medicine would mean risking someone else's life, but I needed this badly for my father. I strutted towards the door about to leave when all of a sudden I felt a hand tug at my shoulder.
"Wait." Zayden spoke cautiously. I looked at him confused when all of a sudden we heard loud gun shots go off in the streets.
