"Babe?" I ask as I feel on the other side of the bed. All I feel is the cold bed and an impression of where Nathan was sleeping. I open my eyes slightly as sunlight pours into the room.
Where's Nathan? I think and tiredly sit up. My feet hit the uncarpeted floor and I quickly pull them back up. After laying in the bed for a few more minutes, I hear a CRASH downstairs. Not caring about the coldness of the floor, I race down the stairs and hear Nathan in the kitchen.
I walk in and see him sweeping up a broken glass. He sees me and looks at me sheepishly.
"Nathan, let me help you," I say and try to stifle a yawn.
"What are you doing up so early?" I ask him as we clean up the glass.
He throws away the glass pieces and replies, "I couldn't sleep. I have a lot of things on my mind."
I look at him with a soft glance, "You can tell me anything. You know that." When he doesn't answer me I sigh and start to walk out of the kitchen. A stray piece of glass manages to sneak its way into my barefoot. "Shoot!" I mumble and Nathan turns around. He looks at me like I'm crazy then sees me holding my right foot.
Nathan helps me onto the couch, "Hold on, Grimm. I'm gonna go get some tweezers."
I wait for him and sing quietly to myself. I get startled when the phone rings and I slam my foot against the side of the couch. I feel my foot throbbing even more now.
Nathan comes back in and picks up the phone. I can overhear Nathan talking. "Hello, Nathan Green speaking. Who is this?" Silence. "Oh, hey." Silence. "Okay. How about at lunch?" Silence. "No!" Silence. "Alright. Fine. See you soon. Bye." And the phone is hung up.
He walks back into the living room with the tweezers. "Who was that?" I ask.
"Lexi. She's coming over after lunch," he answers and puts the tweezers up against my foot.
He squeezes on the glass and my foot tingles. I can tell that the glass is in really deep. I cringe a little as he pulls lightly on the glass. He looks up at my face and stops pulling. "Grimm," he says and goes over to my face.
"It will only hurt for a little while," he whispers in my ear.
"I know. I love you," I reply softly with my eyes closed. He kisses my cheek, "I love you more."
"Prove it," I answer as I kiss him. He kisses me back gently and we both pull away at the same time. He smiles at me and goes back to my foot. Again, he pinches the tweezers and tugs softly. I tell him just to get it out as fast as possible.
Nathan pulls with the tweezers ignoring my moans and small yelps of pain. The glass is not a small piece when he shows it to me. It was about half an inch wide and an inch tall. It hurt like no tomorrow. But, it's out now. I bandage up my foot and sit up.
Nathan has been acting weird lately. Maybe its because I'm failing poorly at my singing lessons that he has to sit and listen to. I don't know for sure why he's acting like this, but I do know that I am going to find out.
He smiles at me when the doorbell rings and walks away. Looks like I'm getting the door. I sigh and hobble over to the door. It's Lexi. "Nathan! Grimm!" Lexi's calls. I open the door and look at her. She smiles, "Hi, Grimm. How are you doing?"
"Um... I'm fine. Why?" I ask.
She looks at me sadly, "Because of Nathan!" I have no idea what she's talking about. What about Nathan?
"What about Nathan? What's wrong?" I'm getting confused.
"He's going into the military, silly!" Lexi says. It takes me a minute to register what she said. She gasps when she realizes that I didn't know. I hear a creak on the floor behind me. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. The door slams. When I open my eyes Lexi is gone. I turn around, tears and hurt rimming at my eyes.
"Nathan..." I say, trailing off. My anger is getting a hold of me. My medicine isn't working. I explode and shove Nathan against a wall. "NATHAN! HOW COULD YOU NOT TELL ME? HOW COULD YOU? YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT THIS!" I yell at him. Tears are now streaming down my face. He grabs my wrists and I try to pull away.
"I was going to tell you, baby. I just di-" he starts.
I cut him off, "No. Nathan. You should have told me first. You should have asked me." He just shakes his hand and drops my wrists. I didn't want him to drop them. I feel like that was the only thing keeping me from exploding again. He walks away and comes back. "I knew you would have said that I couldn't, Grimm," he says, trying not to lose his composure.
I wrap my arms around him, "I'm sorry I yelled at you, Nathan. I know that you were doing what you thought was best. When do you leave babe?"
He lets out a long breath and looks down at me, "Tomorrow." I close my eyes so I won't cry.
It breaks my heart but I have to let him go. "Don't die," I whisper.
"I won't," he answers and kisses my forehead.
