Harry, Ron, and Hermione introduced themselves to the exchange students. Harry was a little surprised that none of them had heard of him, and then a little bit annoyed. He was the Boy Who Lived after all. If it hadn't been for him, Voldemort would still be terrorizing the wizarding world.
"Cool scar by the way." The kid named Leo had said. Cool? Not really. And he seriously had no idea who Harry was? Well, he would find out how famous Harry was, and how important, in a short time.
Hermione and Nico were chatting quietly. Leo and Ron were laughing and joking around. Percy was... well he was eating, but he was also scanning the room, searching for something. "Looking for something?" He asked Percy. He snapped his gaze to Harry. "No, I'm just looking around." Harry knew he wasn't telling the truth, but decided to leave the matter alone. "Alright then. If you're sure." Percy smiled a little falsely, then continued his scan. Harry wasn't sure what he was looking for, but continued to watch.
"So." He eventually said, getting the attention of his two best friends and the exchange students.
"What was going on in America when Voldemort was on the rise?" He asked.
"Moldyvort? Who's that?" Leo asked. Ron spewed pumpkin juice all over the table.
"You don't know who... You Know Who is?"
"Um no, we don't know who. Who is We Know Who? Because we don't know." Percy said.
Well no wonder they didn't know who I am. Harry thought. They don't even know who Voldemort is.
"He was this horrible wizard that went really dark years ago. He and his Death Eaters," he was interrupted by a derisive snort from Nico. "Death Eaters? That's a stupid name. Just...wow. Really scary." Harry, Ron and Hermione stared at him. "Never mind." He said. "Go on."
"Anyways he and his Death Eaters terrorized the wizarding world, using the killing curse on anyone who stood in their way. People feared him so much, that the didn't speak his name. Even today nobody... well almost nobody... refers to him as Voldemort. Instead they call him You Know Who, or He Who Must Not Be Named."
"He was in power for a very long time. At least, until Harry..." Hermione started.
"Wait, wait, wait. Harry?" Leo interrupted. Hermionie let out a huff of air. "Yes, Harry stopped him. That's how he got his scar." Percy nodded. "How old were you?"
"I was only a year old. The spell he cast to kill me backfired and hit him instead. Well, it didn't fully kill him. Just brought him to a state of weakness where he was barely alive for a long time. Then he came back my first year here and tried to kill me again possessing a teacher. Then the next year as a memory. And in my third year, his servant came back-"
"He was my rat." Ron interjected.
"And then in the fourth year he came fully back to power, and killed my friend, Cedric..." Harry's voice cracked a little.
"And then last year, he started gathering more Death Eaters back and gaining more power. He killed... he killed my godfather, Sirius." Harry's voice was raw. "And he's probably out there right now, gaining power." The backstory was meant to make it known how famous he was, but instead it brought back terrible memories.
"I know from experience," he heard Percy say, "that when someone says they're sorry, it never feels genuine. But for what it's worth, I'm sorry." Harry wanted to just say 'thanks' and leave it at that, but he asked, "Who have you lost?" Nico laughed without humor. "Would you like us to make a list?" Harry apologized. "Sorry. I didn't mean to... never mind." Percy shook his head. "No it's ok. You didn't know how much we've been through." Harry had a sudden flash of anger. "We didn't know what you've been through? Did you hear anything I just told you? Fighting a dark wizard is no picnic. Fame isn't as fun as it sounds. Everyone is always wanting to be you and envying you without even knowing what it's like! I grew up with no parents in a home that treated me like scum. I didn't even know who I was until I came to Hogwarts. I've literally been tortured. You think you've been through tough things?" He was shaking. Percy was a dark shade of red. At first, Harry thought it was embarrassment for having assumed he'd been through more than Harry. Then he realized it was anger. Percy stood up, his sea green eyes flashing dangerously. His standing up would've drawn people's attention, if dinner hadn't been over. Students were heading back to their common rooms.
"You think you have been through a lot? You can't even begin to imagine some of the horrors I've been through. And not just me. Some of my best friends have been through things you couldn't believe. And that's one of the worst parts of all for me. Knowing my friends have been through things that I couldn't protect them from. And you've seen what, two people die? I've seen friends die for me, I've had to allow people to sacrifice themselves occasionally for the greater good, and there was nothing I could do. I've been tortured too. I've gone through pain you couldn't even imagine." Percy's voice was trembling from anger.
"You've been through worse pain than a Cruciatus Curse? Every single nerve in your body burns like acid?" Harry challenged, standing up from his seat also.
"I've been through pain like that, and while that pain was happening, I was fighting for my life, and my girlfriend was with me, being tortured along with me in equally horrible ways. I have felt pain in so many different ways. You have no idea what has happened to me and my friends."
The two boys were nose and nose. Both were fuming, and might pull out a wand at any second.
Hermione pulled Harry back with Ron's help, and Nico and Leo pulled Percy back. Nico and Leo both looked angry and so did Ron and Hermione. Harry thought his friends were about to defend him, but instead, they glared at him.
"Harry, what was that for?" Hermione snapped.
"What are you talking about Hermione? He thinks he's been through harder things than we have."
"You leave us out of this mate." Ron said.
"You were the one who started this whole argument Harry." Hermione reminded him angrily.
"I started it?" Harry asked defensively. "He's the one who started going off about how tough his life was."
Hermione shook her head adamantly. "No, Harry. This is your fault. You're the one who got all defensive of being 'the Chosen One' and being so sure that you had been through more. I think you need some time to cool down, as do I." She then stormed off leaving a seething Harry in her wake.
"Well?" He asked, turning to Ron. "Are you going with her, or staying with me?" Ron shook his head. "Not cool mate. Not cool at all." Then he walked off to join Hermione. Percy, Leo, and Nico followed. Harry stood alone in the Great Hall, his friends having abandoned him for brand new exchange students.
