It was lunch time, which was the only part of the day I didn't find a complete waste, and they were serving tacos! I loved tacos and James knew this, he also knew that I walked about as fast as a sloth from class so he would get me about four tacos before they ran out. Did I mention my brother is almost awesome as me? So since it was Taco Tuesday, I made a beeline for James' table where he and his jock friends and whatever girls were fawning over them today, congregated.
"Aloha" I said to James as I stretched over him grabbing my tray and turning to leave.
"Hey Lon, wait" my brother said grabbing my arm before I stalked off.
I turned and looked at him then sighed heavily "Do you have any idea what 'Aloha' means?" I asked, irritation creeping into my voice. I hadn't eaten in roughly 4 hours and I was starving, I'm a sociopath not a masochist.
"It means 'hello' moron" I heard the football team's not so brain dead linebacker Brian say smugly.
"Impressive" I turned my attention to him "You can actually speak using words and not unintelligible grunts" I deadpanned. The table snickered.
"Whatever loser, at least I know the meaning of words before I use them" he countered lamely.
"Dude" My brother interjected, big bro to the rescue am I right.
"What, it's not my fault your sister's stupid" he whined. In his defense when I asked my brother that rhetorical question my tone of voice may not have given the sarcastic impression I was going for and he's kinda slow so he can't be blamed for what his below average intelligence brain failed to comprehend.
I cocked my head to the left as if deep in thought "Out of 100,000 sperms, you were the fastest?"
At this the entire table broke out in laughter "Dude your sister is hilarious" Luke, another member of the football team said punching my brother in the shoulder.
"And hot" another added.
James frowned in disapproval but ignored the comment and asked "Eat with us?" Once again trying to get me to hang out with him and his friends.
I don't know if it was his laughing friends or the red with embarrassment Brian sat quietly at the side nursing his energy drink but I smiled at my brother and said "Nope" kissed his forehead and walked towards an empty table.
I sat down, finally able to take a bite out of my taco. I ate it greedily and a satisfied groan rumbled in the back of my throat .
"Someone was hungry" I looked up to see a smiling Max.
I watched him as he sat down slowly, twiddling his thumbs as though he were nervous about something. I grunted acknowledging his presence and continued eating my taco. He sat there for a while quietly and as much as I valued the quiet when I was alone it didn't quite sit right with me when other people were around. I looked up at him and analyzed his facial expressions, he kept flexing his jaw, his face freshly shaved and his hair carefully styled. He always seemed so put together so this current fidgety Max was a foreign concept to me.
"Something the matter" I quirked up my eyebrows and gave him a quizzical look.
"Um" he laughed nervously "No, I just wanted lunch with you for si-, I wanted to date you for l-," he stopped took a breath and started again "I just wanted to eat lunch with you"he smiled.
"Nice save. Though eating lunch with me would require you to have actual lunch in front of you and not just an empty cafeteria table" I smirked motioning to the empty space in front of him.
He looked down and the table and chuckled "I guess I skipped that part" he turned and looked at the short cafeteria line then turned to face me again "I'll be right back."
