A month later
Malayia *
"Don't take anything for granted"I looked at the board with those words written in my teachers hand writing. All my life I've heard those words. I was raised by them. I know them all too well. As the teacher explained to us the assignment I couldn't help but to think back on my life just a few months ago.
Throughout my life those words have been drilled into me. I was brought up to learn to adjust to life and what it throws at me quickly. Something might be here one day and gone the next. My so called "mom" raised me to know that nothing in life is guaranteed.
My life has changed so drastically in the last five months, nothing in my life is the same. New school. New people. New house. New city. New family. Everything's changed.
"Malayia do you understand the assignment?" My teacher questioned clearly aware that I wasn't focused.
"Yes ma'am I do." Just as the words escaped my mouth the bell rang signaling the end of school.
Mrs. Cash gave me a skeptic look, like she didn't believe me.I sighed, "You want an essay on our lives and how we've learned to never take anything for granted." I rambled as I was heading out the door and into the busy, crowded hallway.
In all honesty I'm pretty sure I've got this one in the bag. I don't think anyone's story can top mine.
"Malayia! Wait up ma!" A male voice rang through the crowd.
I ignored it and continued to leave the school. The sun was beating down causing it to be extremely hot for a October day. I slowly walked through the parking lot and headed down the street for my walk home.
Fifteen minutes into my walk a baby blue old school Cadillac pulled up beside me riding slow. "Do you need a ride?" A girl asked after she rolled down the window.
I gladly took the ride considering I still had forty-five minutes until I got home. I would have caught a ride with Kam and Zay but they didn't come to school today.
"My name is Chilyn but you can call me Chi for short," she introduced herself to me as soon as I was in the passenger seat.
"Thanks for the ride. I'm Malayia by the way," I introduced myself too as I gave her directions to my house. "So are you new here?" I haven't seen her around before.
"Yeah I moved here from Dallas. You?"
"I moved here five months ago. From Georgia.""Dang girl what you doing dine here in Texas?" She asked with her accent.
